Cillian Murphy’s Shocking Return to28 Years Later Trilogy: Danny Boyle Drops Major Hint!
It’s been over two decades since his breakthrough role in 28 Days Later.
Danny Boyle hints that Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role in the popular zombie series, appearing in one of the future installments.
As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement! The venerable director himself, at 68 years young, is diving headfirst into an epic trilogy, serving as a thrilling sequel to the chilling post-apocalyptic horror from 2002. And I can hardly wait!
When the thrilling trailer for the eagerly awaited movie dropped in December, viewers were taken aback by an unforeseen scene where a zombie emerged from a field, surprising Jodie Comer’s character.
The video ignited global conjecture among enthusiasts, who thought it might depict the undead version of Cillian’s character Jim from the initial movie.
Yet, this theory came to a swift end when it emerged that the London art dealer and model was, in fact, the actor portraying the zombie character.

However, an exhilarating piece of news for fans! It appears that Danny hinted at the possibility of Cillian, who is 48 years old, potentially making a comeback in one of the upcoming movies within the trilogy.
At the 2025 CinemaCon event hosted by Sony, the director subtly suggested: “Just as with many valuable experiences, it might take some time before [Cillian] graces our screens.
28 Years Later was directed by Danny and stars Jodie, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes.
The movie was simultaneously produced with “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” a film directed by Nia DaCosta, scheduled for release in January 2026.
Previously, producer Andrew Macdonald stated that Cillian wouldn’t appear in 28 Years Later. However, he hinted at the possibility of Cillian reappearing in a future movie.
He informed Empire that we both desired his involvement, and indeed, he expressed a similar desire. Initially, he won’t appear in the initial movie, but I hope there will be some character resembling Jim at some point in the future.
He mentioned: ‘Currently, he’s working as an executive producer. I eagerly anticipate that we might collaborate with him in some capacity for the upcoming trilogy.’
Following Angus Neill’s confirmation to The Guardian that he portrays ‘Emaciated Infected’ in the movie, there was a character that spectators erroneously identified as Cillian.

Later on, Danny acknowledged that he hadn’t foreseen the widespread assumption that the character was actually a guest appearance by the Academy Award-winning actor.
In response to showing the trailer to his girlfriend, she remarked, “It looks like Cillian Murphy,” to which he responded, “You’re being irrational.” He chose not to engage further with her opinion. However, he has since admitted that he was mistaken in dismissing her initial observation.
Last January, Cillian refuted rumors suggesting his return to the popular zombie series.
He shared his intentions about collaboration with The Independent: “I’d jump at the chance. I’ve worked on two films with both directors (Boyle and Garland), and I’d be thrilled to collaborate with them once more. Naturally, I’m ready and eager.
In the initial movie “28 Days Later,” Cillian portrayed a bicycle messenger who emerged from a coma, only to find that an unintentional virus leak had led to the collapse of society due to its ability to instigate extreme aggression in humans.
Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson took on secondary characters within the production.

28 Days Later stood out as a groundbreaking movie because it introduced swift, agile zombies instead of the traditional slow and lumbering ones.
28 days, weeks, and years have passed since a lethal virus broke out in London, transforming its inhabitants into ravenous murderers.
In the aftermath of a deadly virus outbreak that occurred 28 days, weeks, and years ago in London, people were turned into bloodthirsty killers.
Or simply:
After a lethal virus spread in London 28 days, weeks, and years back, its victims became bloodthirsty killers.
The film 28 Years Later is the sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later and 2007’s 28 Weeks Later.
28 Years Later, produced on a $75 million budget, is the largest film ever made using an iPhone and continues the innovative path set by a groundbreaking Apple TV series.
