Cillian Murphy’s “intense” Netflix movie Steve is based on a story that ‘broke his heart’
Cillian Murphy’s upcoming Netflix film carries a heavy emotional weight, as it’s inspired by a tale that deeply moved him.
Steve is derived from the 2023 novel “Shy” by Max Porter, which centers around a school principal (portrayed by Murphy) and his students at a struggling last-chance educational institution that’s set to be shut down.
The movie marks the debut production of Big Things Films, a newly established company by Murphy and Alan Moloney. Last year’s “Small Things Like These” was another project handled by this team. Joining them as producers are Lyndsay Myles and Tina Pawlik, who have previously worked on shows like “Top Boy” and “Ted Lasso”.
What to Read Next
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that the author himself is transforming his book into a screenplay, while director Tim Mielants, known for his work on “Small Things Like These,” will be bringing “Steve” to life on the big screen.
Last year, while discussing the project, Murphy couldn’t help but gush over Porter’s writing, saying it has a real impact on you, making you feel something deep inside.
Max handed over an unfinished proof copy of that book to me, which once again left my heart in pieces, he confided in Deadline. “Such works resonate deeply with me both as a reader and as an artist, and I was eager to collaborate with him on them.
Murphy characterized the movie as being “extremely humorous,” while Moloney noted it carries an “understated humor.” When selecting this project for their company, they emphasized the importance of “strong writing.
In addition, they strive to provide entertainment in some way, as he explained their philosophy. This doesn’t mean they exclusively create grim, challenging films or narratives. Instead, they focus on whatever script resonates with them and carries a meaningful message.
Last year, filming for the series titled “Steve” was done from May through July. At that time, Netflix posted a backstage photo as a way to announce its completion.
What is Steve about?
The narrative revolves around the main character, Steve, who is the principal of a college dedicated to transforming its students. Over the span of one day, Steve and the students work tirelessly to prevent the institution’s shutdown. Meanwhile, Steve battles his own mental health issues throughout this critical period.
The plot additionally revolves around Shy, a teen wrestling with a turbulent past and an uncertain future, as he grapples with destructive and aggressive inclinations within himself.
Instead of being narrated through Shy’s eyes, Steve will present a new take by telling the story from his own perspective.
In his conversation with Deadline, Murphy shared that the concept originated from Max, who suggested viewing the situation from the perspective of the headteacher managing the institution. Upon discussing this idea with Alan and Max, they collectively visualized a potential film, where the same events unfold but are observed through a distinct viewpoint.
He mentioned, “I’m a fan of movies set in real-time. Since this story takes place over a 24-hour period, it creates an immediate sense of high tension and stress for the characters.
When will Steve be released?
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the much-anticipated movie is scheduled for release this autumn. In an exciting revelation during the Film Fest Gent // World Soundtrack Awards podcast this year, it was announced that the strategy is to debut it in select US cinemas on October 3rd, aiming for awards season recognition. Following this limited run, the film will be widely available on Netflix.
Who is in Steve?
In addition to Murphy, the movie will feature Jay Lycurgo playing Shy. As for the rest of the cast, while it hasn’t been officially confirmed, there are whispers that Emily Watson from Dune: Prophecy, Tracey Ullman from Black Doves, and Little Simz from Top Boy may also be part of the production.
Steve is likely to be released in US cinemas on 3 October, before streaming on Netflix this autumn.
