The highly praised film Small Things Like These, featuring Cillian Murphy and Emily Watson, will soon be removed from a UK streaming service. Many consider it to be one of Murphy’s best performances.
This drama is based on Claire Keegan’s 2021 novel and takes place in 1980s Ireland. It stars a familiar face from Peaky Blinders as Bill Furlong, a coal merchant and father to five daughters, living in the town of New Ross.
The Magdalene laundries cast a dark shadow over County Wexford, and Bill has witnessed the cruel treatment of many young women there. He’s struggling with a difficult choice: should he conform to what’s expected of him, or risk everything to help those who are suffering?

The period drama is currently streaming on Prime Video in the UK and Ireland, but it won’t be available for much longer. It’s listed as ‘Leaving Soon,’ which usually means it will be removed within the next 30 days, although a specific date hasn’t been announced.
The film stars Cillian Murphy and Sister Mary, played by Eileen Walsh, alongside Clare Dunne and Zara Devlin. Tim Mielants directed the movie, based on a script by Enda Walsh, with Cillian Murphy and Matt Damon also producing.
What to Read Next
When the drama was released in 2024, critics loved it, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 124 reviews. It’s the second best-reviewed film of the director’s career, surpassed only by the animated adventure Kensuke’s Kingdom, which received a 97% rating.
In a four-star review, Digital Spy praised Cillian Murphy’s performance as Bill in Small Things Like These, noting he portrays a weariness that at first seems due to the demands of his job, but is later revealed to stem from his internal struggles.
Although the film unfolds at a deliberate pace, its power comes from what’s suggested rather than explicitly shown. Much is left unsaid, but the ending hints at a possible, though not guaranteed, hopeful future.

Empire Magazine also highly praised the film, noting that it thoughtfully explores a crucial question: how good people can allow terrible things to occur, and what we can do to prevent them.
Actor Murphy, currently starring in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, will work again with directors Mielants and Watson in 2025 for the Netflix drama Steve. This new series, based on Max Porter’s 2023 book Shy, is set in a school environment.
Small Things Like These is streaming on Prime Video.
