Cillian Murphy’s “dark and disturbing” British thriller is now streaming for free
Cillian Murphy and Thandiwe Newton’s thriller Retreat is now streaming for free in the UK.
In 2011, Carl Tibbetts made his directorial debut with a film that showcases actors from Oppenheimer and Line of Duty as a pair living on an isolated island following their survival from a deadly airborne virus.
Starting on July 1st, you can stream the movie for free on Tubi, a commercial streaming service accessible in the UK and various other regions. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you can also watch the film on their platform.

Written collaboratively by Tibbetts and acclaimed author Janice Hallett, who is also a journalist and mystery novelist, the book Retreat chronicles the story of Martin (Murphy), an architect, and Kate (Newton), a journalist, as they struggle through a challenging period in their marriage following a miscarriage.
The duo make their way to Blackholme Island, an isolated Scottish island that they had previously enjoyed their vacations at. However, an uneasy blackout disconnected them from the mainland, and then a soldier, Private Jack Corman (played by Jamie Bell), arrives to deliver the troubling news – there’s been an outbreak of a mysterious disease.
In this chilling, suspenseful tale, Jimmy Yuill portrays Doug, the operator and proprietor of Fairweather Cottage who also runs a boat ferry. His on-screen spouse is Marilyn Mantle, known as Mrs. Doug in the credits.
The movie titled “Retreat” was initially screened at Fantasia Film Festival during the summer of 2011. It later appeared in select theaters in October of the same year. Despite being shown in UK and US cinemas, the film has remained relatively unknown, garnering some favorable reviews along the way.
Viewers on IMDb find themselves enthralled by the film’s brooding, somber mood, which one viewer characterized as “bleak and unsettling.” However, they express disappointment with its less-than-satisfying conclusion.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation when I hear that Retreat on Rotten Tomatoes has garnered a 63% critics’ score. The Guardian even hailed it as a “smart, skillfully assembled three-player game,” leveraging its stunning locations to the fullest and providing a rich, substantial role for Bell that left me eagerly awaiting his next move.
Retreat is streaming on Tubi and Netflix in the UK.
