Cillian Murphy shares “completely underwhelming” set goodbye to Peaky Blinders

Cillian Murphy, known for his role as Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders, has played the character since the show began in 2013. Even after the series concluded with its sixth season, he reprised the role for Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

Scheduled for release in March 2026, the movie returns to 1940s Birmingham, where Tommy Shelby confronts his past and what he’ll be remembered for. This will conclude Tommy’s story, paving the way for a new season of Peaky Blinders.

Although The Immortal Man concludes the story for his character, actor Murphy felt his farewell after ten years in the role was a bit sudden. He explained that filming his final scene ended quite abruptly.

He remembered filming a particularly moving scene on a rainy hillside in the Peak District as daylight faded. He described the weather as ‘pissing rain’ in an interview with Empire.

The actor shared that after filming the last scene, everyone simply left. He chuckled, adding, “It was surprisingly anticlimactic.”

Even though filming has finished, Murphy feels like he’s still connected to his character, Tommy, and hasn’t fully said goodbye to the role.

He said he needs to wait until the movie is released before he can fully understand or reflect on it, because he feels a film isn’t truly complete until an audience has seen it.

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, wants the upcoming movie to feel like a satisfying conclusion to the series, similar to the final chapters of a book. He explained that it will wrap up the story and set the stage for future projects.

Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as Tommy Shelby in two more seasons of Peaky Blinders. The new seasons will be set in 1953, depicting Birmingham’s recovery and rebuilding after the Second World War.

The fight to control Birmingham’s huge rebuilding effort is turning into an intense and dramatic power struggle. The city offers incredible opportunities, but also significant risks, and the Shelby family is at the center of it all, often facing violence and hardship, according to a preview of the story.

The new Peaky Blinders film, titled ‘The Immortal Man,’ will hit theaters on March 6, 2026, and will then be available to stream on Netflix starting March 20th.
