Cillian Murphy recently shared whether he plans to return as Tommy Shelby after appearing in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. The original Peaky Blinders series ran for six seasons, from 2013 to 2022, and received many awards. However, the story isn’t over yet – creator Steven Knight quickly announced a film to conclude the saga. The Immortal Man will be available on Netflix on March 20, 2026.
Cillian Murphy told Empire that he’ll be finished playing Thomas Shelby after the upcoming movie. He explained he doesn’t think the reality of ending his time with the character will truly hit him until the film is out, because, as he put it, a movie isn’t really complete until an audience sees it.
Murphy shared how difficult filming his last scene as Tommy was. The cast and crew were soaked by heavy rain while shooting on a hillside in the Peak District. Although the scene was meant to be deeply emotional, it turned out to be surprisingly anticlimactic. After they finished filming, everyone simply went home – there wasn’t a big, celebratory goodbye on set.
Knight wants The Immortal Man to feel like a natural ending to a story – complete and satisfying, but still open enough to suggest the characters’ lives continue, even if we don’t always see what happens to them after the credits roll.
Though it’s only been four years since Peaky Blinders ended and The Immortal Man premieres on Netflix, a full decade will have passed for the characters within the story. Cillian Murphy’s character, Tommy Shelby, concluded Peaky Blinders by riding off into a hopeful future, having learned his initial medical diagnosis wasn’t life-threatening.
The show’s ambiguous ending gave Knight the opportunity to write and produce The Immortal Man, a new film set during World War II in 1940. It continues Tommy’s story with even greater conspiracies and dangers.
The cast of The Immortal Man features both familiar and new faces, including Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, Jay Lycurgo, and Barry Keoghan.
Though The Immortal Man will be Cillian Murphy and Stephen Graham’s final appearances as their Peaky Blinders characters, Murphy will stay involved with the franchise as an executive producer. He’ll join creator Steven Knight in developing a new Peaky Blinders television show set in post-World War II Britain in 1953. Details about when the show will be made and released are still to come.
Fans of Peaky Blinders can look forward to The Immortal Man coming to Netflix in early 2026, continuing the story of the Shelby family.
The new Peaky Blinders movie, The Immortal Man, will arrive in cinemas on March 6, 2026, and will then be available to stream on Netflix starting March 20.
