Chuck D makes bold political statement in Consequence collab ahead of Donald Trump’s presidential victory
As a lifelong fan of music that speaks truth to power, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of frustration and disillusionment as I read about Chuck D’s latest collaboration with Consequence, “What Has America Done.” Having grown up in the era when Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” was an anthem for a generation, I’ve seen firsthand how far we’ve come and yet how little progress we’ve made.
Chuck D articulates his thoughts vividly concerning the current state of society, as expressed during this recent week’s presidential campaign, following the debut of their collaborative music video titled “What Has America Become.
The collaboration between the rappers Public Enemy, aged 64, and Consequence, aged 47, concentrates on the hurdles Black Americans face, emerging during a period of unrest as President-elect Donald Trump was re-elected for a second term in the U.S.
Chuck D shared his thoughts with TMZ on Thursday, following the two-day gap since Vice President Kamala Harris came up short in her attempt to make history as America’s first female African-American president.
During the election period, the rapper claimed that malicious online actors deliberately undermined the Harris campaign.
The musician, known as Public Enemy’s Chuck D, recently stated to TMZ Hip Hop that avatars are becoming similar to the modern-day Klan hoodies, implying a disturbing continuity of old prejudices and discriminations.
He added: ‘Like it or not, especially if you’re African American, we must continue to pursue our equality and make sure we do everything in our power to level the playing field as best we possibly can.’
The artist behind the Bring the Noise single’s promotional artwork expressed that by creating such work, we might overlook our past journey and the efforts required to reach our current position.
The song lyrics say: “What benefits have I received from America? Did it help me reach my goals? Accused me falsely of a crime? Only served me fast food like French fries and burgers?
On Consequence’s album titled “Nice Doing Business With You”, the track appears along with vocal contributions by Tony Williams, a member of The Wrldfms, according to reports from TMZ.
“One of the videos by socially aware artists, showing instances of racial bias, homelessness, and law enforcement activities, is part of the initial responses reflecting the evolving societal climate following Donald Trump’s re-election.
Following President-elect Trump’s victory and potential second term in the White House, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale” – which portrays a society where women are severely oppressed – has consistently ranked high on Amazon.com’s best seller list.
During Trump’s initial presidency, The Handmaid’s Tale gained widespread popularity, much like other dystopian future stories such as George Orwell’s 1984 and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. By Thursday afternoon, both of these books had found their way into the top 40 best-sellers on Amazon.
In my personal reading endeavors, I found myself engrossed in a highly-regarded book, “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century,” by Timothy Snyder – a noteworthy read from Trump’s past tenure that made it to the top 10 bestsellers list.
Books that support Donald Trump were also popular sellers. Melania Trump’s memoir, titled “Melania,” topped Amazon’s list, and Vice President-elect JD Vance’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” ranked among the top 10. A photo book featuring Donald Trump, called “Save America,” was in the top 30 on the sales chart.
At Barnes & Noble, as reported by their director of books, Shannon DeVito, there was a significant increase in the sales of fiction and non-fiction books that tackle themes such as fascism, feminism, dystopian societies, and political ideologies from both the right and left, following the election results.
She referenced Melania Trump’s book “On Tyranny” and Bob Woodward’s newest work titled “War,” which delves into how both Donald Trump and President Joe Biden handled crises in Ukraine and the Middle East.
DeVito also cited ‘a massive bump in dystopian fiction,’ notably for The Handmaid’s Tale and 1984.
