Chronicle all the critters in ‘The Star Wars Bestiary, Volume 1: Creatures of the Galaxy’
As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who’s traversed the galaxy far, far away countless times, I can confidently say that the upcoming book, “The Star Wars Bestiary, Volume 1: Creatures of the Galaxy,” has me absolutely thrilled! The idea of an in-universe book narrated by a member of the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts resonates deeply with my inner galactic zoologist.
Star Wars supplemental literature has always been enjoyable, but it’s even more engaging when it feels like an actual galaxy far, far away book. That’s exactly what the upcoming title “The Star Wars Bestiary, Volume 1: Creatures of the Galaxy” promises to be. It’s set to make a splash on November 5th, much like a wampa might.
StarWars.com recently interviewed S.T. Bende (writer) and Iris Compiet (illustrator), who worked together on the upcoming “beastiary” (a book about creatures). Here, they shared details about the project’s concept, their motivations behind it, and the parts they enjoyed creating the most. A full preview of this exciting collaboration can be found in Star Wars Insider magazine, issue #228, which will be available on October 29th.
In the story, Bende chose a member of the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts as the narrator to present the concept behind the book. This character, Ardis San Tekka, was invented for this purpose and given a unique profession in the Star Wars universe – that of a creature cartographer. Ardis isn’t alone on these adventures; she is accompanied by her helpful friend, B8-T5, who I refer to as “Bait.” This droid has the knack for drawing creatures out from their hiding places, although he doesn’t always find it enjoyable!
If this scenario seems familiar, particularly if you’re a follower of the Star Wars Kids’ YouTube channel, it bears resemblance to the webseries titled “Star Wars: Galaxy of Creatures“. In this series, a droid named SF-R3, also known as “Aree”, embarks on adventures to catalog the various creatures he encounters. Interestingly, Aree and San Tekka are both affiliated with the same organization, creating an intriguing connection.
Bende expressed joy about penning her preferred creatures to write on, inspired by her beloved Star Wars productions, particularly “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Star Wars Rebels.” She found writing about tauntauns enjoyable as it was a tribute to her favorite film. However, the opportunity to write about purrgil was exceptional for her. As a child, she was captivated by the idea of space whales, something unique in Star Wars and beyond her wildest imagination. This connection to real-world creatures she adores made it even more special. Seeing them in the galaxy far, far away brought her immense pleasure, and her excitement peaked when they reappeared in “Ahsoka.” Now, purrgil can be encountered in the Star Tours ride at Disney Parks, making it possible for her to ride alongside one for the first time!
Compiet’s top picks were particularly intriguing due to their amusing aspects. “Banthas!” she exclaimed, “That was the initial creature I illustrated when I embarked on this venture. My enthusiasm knew no bounds. I was so green. I drew them in numerous scenarios. Then, I realized, ‘Oh, I still have 130 other animals to go.’ I’m smitten with the blurrgs. They are undeniably strange creatures, and a joy to depict: they resemble fishy blobs standing on two legs with T-Rex-like arms.
As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, here’s a hint for those eager to catch a glimpse of the exotic creatures featured in “The Star Wars Bestiary, Volume 1: Creatures of the Galaxy” before anyone else: Secure your copy of “Star Wars Insider #228” on October 29. For those with a bit more patience than me, you can get your hands on the bestiary itself starting November 5.
