Christy Turlington has said she felt deeply unsettled when men started to ogle her daughter.
Christy, a well-known supermodel from the 1990s, was used to being looked at by men. However, she says her perspective changed when she noticed men looking at her 22-year-old daughter, Grace Burns.
You know, it’s one of those things you’re generally aware of, but it didn’t really hit home for me until I became a mom. Seeing how men looked at my daughter when she was around 15… that was a real wake-up call. It completely shifted my perspective.
Grace is the oldest child of actress Christy Burns and has begun a career in modeling, following in her mother’s footsteps.
In a conversation on the Bella Freud Fashion Neurosis podcast, Christy questioned whether men could resist temptation in a similar scenario.
She explained that, in her opinion, many men struggle to manage their reactions to a young woman’s beauty and inherent innocence, seeing her as a child in a way that complicates things.
It seems like whatever it is causes a reaction in people, almost like a drug, and they don’t even realize it’s happening.
People often react instinctively, and it’s important to teach them how to recognize those reactions and understand why they’re happening. It’s quite unusual to witness this lack of self-awareness.
Christy celebrated her daughter Grace’s 22nd birthday in October, praising her for being poised, sensible, and determined.
Honestly, it blows my mind how fast the last 22 years have gone by! It feels like just yesterday, but then I also feel like I’ve known these people forever – like we’ve been friends for centuries, you know?
I’ve been impressed with you ever since we met. Your grace, good sense, and strength of character are truly exceptional, and I can’t find the words to fully describe all the wonderful qualities you possess.
Just like with everything you’ve achieved so far, I know this is only the beginning for you.
Christy and her husband, Ed, have a son, Finn, who is 18, and a daughter named Grace. They first met in 2000 while volunteering at a charity event and married three years later, in 2003.
Grace is following in her mother’s footsteps in the modelling world.
Even after people told her to avoid it, Grace started her career as a model in 2023, walking the runway at the X LuisaViaRoma show in Florence, Italy.
Just two months prior to that, the mother and daughter had starred in an advertising campaign for Carolina Herrera.
This past summer, Christy posted a seldom-seen family photo on social media, sharing that she’s now an ’empty nester’ with her husband and two children.
She shared a lovely family photo to celebrate her son Finn’s high school graduation.
She announced on social media that her last child has left home, calling herself an ’empty nester.’ The post received many likes, including one from her friend, Linda Evangelista.
Honestly, it’s a bit early to say how I’m really feeling about this big change. I need some time – about three months, actually – after my son has gotten settled into college and is living on his own across the country. Then I can give you a truly honest answer!
The actor said that each day is a blessing, particularly when you’re healthy, feel secure, and have a good support system.
I’ve realized that life is short and our time here is limited. What really matters is building strong relationships and connecting with people in a meaningful way.
After a near-fatal experience during her daughter’s birth in 2003, the model founded Every Mother Counts in 2010. This nonprofit organization works to improve maternal health and overcome the challenges women face during pregnancy and childbirth, both internationally and in the United States.
Typically, after the baby is born, mothers are feeling alright and focusing on recovery and bonding. However, within an hour or so, things changed, and I started experiencing a severe postpartum hemorrhage, as I explained before.
‘A woman can bleed to death within two hours.’
Christy explained that Every Mother Counts is a campaign working to ensure safe pregnancies and deliveries for all mothers, no matter where they are.
Hundreds of thousands of girls and women die each year due to a lack of access to essential maternity care, including help during emergencies.
