Christopher Nolan’s star-studded epic The Odyssey will do something no movie has ever done

It’s been unveiled that the forthcoming movie by Christopher Nolan, titled The Odyssey, is set to make cinematic history in an unprecedented manner.

In the upcoming blockbuster movie, notable actors like Matt Damon, Zendaya, and Tom Holland are set to bring to life once more the timeless saga of Ulysses, the King of Ithaca, as he navigates his voyage back home after the Trojan War.

The movie, it turns out, will be the initial full-length commercial production filmed exclusively using IMAX film cameras.

Although the director has filmed earlier movies like “Oppenheimer” in IMAX format using digital cameras, employing traditional film cameras for such projects can be tricky due to their bulkiness and the noise they generate.

Previously, documentaries were captured using IMAX cameras extensively, yet this instance signifies the debut for an IMAX-filmed feature movie.

At the Cannes Film Festival, IMAX chief Rich Gelfond reminisced (as reported by Deadline), sharing that a year prior to Chris commencing filming The Odyssey, he phoned expressing his desire to produce an entire movie filmed using IMAX cameras.

“That couldn’t be done for a lot of reasons,” he added, noting “there were lots of issues”.

Indeed, he remembered Nolan saying: “I’m setting you a task. If you can crack these puzzles, I promise to create Odyssey entirely using IMAX cameras – and now, we’ve cracked the code.

He went on to say, “This is going to be the very first movie entirely captured using IMAX cameras.” In doing so, the director challenged us to reconsider and adapt our approach to filmmaking in various innovative ways.

This year, the initial image showing Damon as the lead character, Odysseus, was revealed earlier. However, some viewers later noted an inconsistency in the depiction as his armor appeared to be from a later historical era.

In addition to Damon, Zendaya, and Holland, the film will also feature Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Robert Pattinson as stars.

The Odyssey is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 17, 2026.
