Christopher Eccleston’s “chilling” Edinburgh-set thriller is now streaming for free

I’m thrilled to share that the ’90s dark comedy, featuring the brilliant Christopher Eccleston, has made its way onto a free streaming service here in the UK! If you haven’t seen it yet, now’s your chance to enjoy some nostalgic humor at no cost!

Back in the mid-90s, I got my hands on a gripping flick called “Shallow Grave.” In this movie, I found myself immersed in the lives of Eccleston, Ewan McGregor, and Kerry Fox – housemates living it up in Edinburgh. To make ends meet, we’re talking some pretty daring stunts to score a bit more dough.

Currently available at no cost through Channel 4’s online service, you can watch the gripping first directorial venture by Danny Boyle (known for “28 Days Later”), where the main characters seek to add another member to their household group.

The threesome accept enigmatic character Hugo, portrayed by Keith Allen, into their group. However, they are taken aback when their latest roommate perishes and leaves an oversized bag brimming with cash as his legacy.

A chaotic situation unfolds when David (Eccleston), Juliet (Fox), and Alex (McGregor) opt to keep the money and dismember Hugo’s body, unaware of the proper methods for handling such a scenario or the emotional strain it might inflict on them later.

In this rendition, Boyle oversees a screenplay penned by John Hodge, having previously collaborated on the iconic movie “Trainspotting” in 1996. Two years later, they reconnected for the production, with the film being an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s 1993 novel. Ewan McGregor reunites with the writer and director following their collaboration on “Shallow Grave“, taking on the role of Mark Renton in “Trainspotting“.

Speaking of “Shallow Grave”, it was Danny Boyle’s debut film as a director for the big screen following his work on TV shows like “ScreenPlay” and “Inspector Morse”. Later on, Boyle directed the 2002 infection horror movie “28 Days Later”, featuring actors such as Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, and Eccleston.

In the latest installment of the franchise, Boyle rejoines for the sequel and third movie titled “28 Years Later“, now playing in theaters. This film boasts an impressive cast including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alfie Williams, Ralph Fiennes, and Jack O’Connell.

In addition to creating the upcoming movie “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” the filmmaker is simultaneously working on a fourth film. This movie, directed by Nia DaCosta, was filmed alongside “28 Years Later.” It’s scheduled for release in cinemas on January 16, 2026.

Shallow Grave is streaming on Channel 4. 28 Years Later is in cinemas now.
