The story of the unforgettable vampire, Count Dracula, is so well-known that he often appears in other stories as well. The new film Dracula, directed by Luc Besson (known for films like The Fifth Element and La Femme Nikita), offers a fresh take on the classic vampire story. Dracula: A Love Tale Chose Romance Over Horror
The story opens with a fantastical scene featuring Prince Vladimir of Wallachia and his wife, Princess Elizabeta. Immediately after, Vladimir is summoned to fight in a war for the Ottoman Empire. Believing he is fighting a holy war, Vladimir prays to God – through his priest – for the safety of Elizabeta.
It’s a truly haunting story. When Elizabeta suffers a terrible death, Vladimir does something unthinkable – he kills the priest right in the church, driven by a desperate promise to find her again when she’s reborn. As punishment, or maybe a cruel twist of fate, God won’t let him die, even though he desperately wants to. He slowly transforms into a vampire, forced to drink blood just to stay alive and maintain his youth. It’s a really tragic and compelling setup.
Vladimir’s change into Count Dracula isn’t meant to scare us; it’s actually a sad story about a man haunted by the loss of his true love. Consumed by his grief, he creates a perfume to lure women, making it easier for him to turn them into vampires. He then sends his newly created vampires to search for Elizabeta, but unexpectedly finds her himself when a lawyer named Jonathan Harker arrives with his fiancée, Mina Murray.
Caleb Landry Jones plays a frightening Dracula, but director Luc Besson emphasizes the character’s romantic side. The film blends fantasy and romance, and surprisingly, Dracula despises drinking blood. He became a vampire through fate, not by choice, and only does what’s necessary to survive. This version of the story focuses more on Dracula’s inner pain and longing than on his frightening nature.
The Priest is on a mission to stop Vladimir’s reign of terror over London. But Christoph realizes defeating Count Dracula won’t be easy – it will take more than just force, as Dracula is incredibly powerful. Christoph must seek Dracula’s forgiveness and choose to save Mina, even though he’s waited centuries for her return.
Dracula: A Love Tale Is Finding New Life On Streaming
The film premiered in France on July 30, 2025, and will be released in North America on February 6, 2026. While the delayed release initially limited its success in theaters, it quickly became a top 10 movie on Amazon after becoming available for digital rental and purchase.
As a movie fan, I was completely blown away by Dracula: A Love Tale. Beyond the fantastic acting and smart script, it was just a gorgeous film. They shot it all over the world in these amazing locations, and the style! Seriously, the costumes were incredible – hundreds of them made specifically for the movie. And the armor they created for Vladimir when he was still human? Absolutely stunning details. It really added to the whole experience.
Though it doesn’t have a cheerful conclusion, Dracula: A Love Tale is filled with exciting moments, rich backstory, and surprising twists that will keep you engaged. While Elizabeta, one of only two female characters, could have been more independent, the heartbreaking romance between her and Vladimir takes center stage, forcing Dracula to decide whether to embrace heroism or villainy.
