Christian Cage was the wrong choice to win the AEW Casino Gauntlet Match

As a seasoned wrestling fan with decades of watching under my belt, I must say that the Casino Gauntlet match at AEW All-In was a rollercoaster ride of emotions, pure joy, and a dash of frustration. The return of Nigel McGuinness and Ricochet’s debut were highlights that ignited the crowd and set the stage for an unforgettable spectacle. However, the ending left me scratching my head.

At AEW All-In, the Casino Gauntlet battle stood out as a summer spectacle. It was meticulously planned, featuring Nigel McGuinness’s grand comeback and Ricochet’s entrance into All Elite Wrestling. The match was electrifying from start to finish, until the very end. Unfortunately, Christian Cage’s win concluded a contest that had injected so much excitement into the show.

The Casino Gauntlet match was filled with excitement! Now that it’s concluded, there are many intriguing developments on the horizon. Some of the exchanges between Adam Page and Kazuchika Okada suggest that they might have significant rivalries ahead. However, Cage’s win doesn’t seem to set up anything particularly compelling for the future.

As an ardent fan, I appreciate how AEW handles their champions with strength. They are granted substantial title reigns filled with victories, many of which are predictable since Tony Khan carefully designs matches to ensure the champion emerges victorious, boosting their image until it’s time for them to relinquish the title. The recent victory by Christian Cage sets him up as Bryan Danielson’s first challenger, but some fans, including myself, question if he truly needed that spot. The general consensus online is a resounding “no.”

Lately, Cage found himself in a similar scenario when Swerve Strickland required an opponent. The Elite chose him to battle Strickland at AEW Double or Nothing. Although it was an entertaining bout, there were no indications that he’d emerge victorious. Similarly, here, Cage will make for an exciting performance given his strong villain character, but there’s nothing to worry about in terms of him beating Danielson. As Coach Nick Saban puts it, “It’s not going to happen.”

In this contest, there were numerous alternative paths AEW could have taken for the victor. For instance, consider a future confrontation between McGuinness and Danielson. Given their statures, such a showdown seems inevitable. It would have been more fitting if McGuinness, making his comeback after 13 years, had emerged victorious in this match. Such an outcome would have paved the way for a highly anticipated match between the two. While it’s not essential that McGuinness win, such a contest would certainly make sense due to their history and skills.

In another scenario, suppose Jeff Jarrett emerged victorious. This could provide AEW with an opportunity to build upon the flame he ignited in Danielson a while back. With this spark as a base, they could weave a captivating storyline that would last for several weeks until the next pay-per-view event.

If you’re searching for an exceptional wrestler who could deliver an outstanding match alongside Danielson, Kyle O’Reilly fits the bill perfectly. Alternatively, instead of Cage, another intriguing option exists.

In AEW, power seems to be consistently concentrated among a select few individuals, who are adored by fans. However, this consistency can lead to unsurprising content and hinders the growth of other potential stars. AEW should introduce new blood at the top levels, and choosing Christian Cage might not be the best approach for that.
