I’ve been eagerly awaiting this! After a lot of buzz – and honestly, some pretty strong opinions – about this indie horror film, it’s finally coming to streaming! It first hit theaters last October, and I was fascinated to learn the director, Chris Stuckmann, actually funded a big chunk of it – over a million dollars! – through Kickstarter. He’s a well-known film critic and writer with a huge following on YouTube – over two million subscribers, which is incredible! It’s so cool to see someone with that kind of online presence bring a passion project like this to life.
The movie features Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Keith David, Sarah Durn, and Derek Mears. It centers on a woman’s relentless search for her sister, who disappeared while exploring a deserted town. Combining elements of supernatural horror and mystery, the film is a slow-paced, atmospheric experience that gradually increases tension and suspense.
Though it didn’t appeal to all viewers, Shelby Oaks earned over $6 million at the box office – a solid result for a film made with so much personal investment, and with Mike Flanagan as executive producer. The movie received mixed reviews, scoring 55% from critics and 53% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Some found it unoriginal, while others praised it as a genuinely scary horror film. You can decide for yourself when it starts streaming on Hulu on April 17th.
‘Shelby Oaks’ Was a Deeply Personal Film for Chris Stuckmann
Many of Stuckmann’s followers are familiar with his life story. For those who aren’t, he grew up in the Jehovah’s Witness faith. When he was twelve, his sister was ostracized by the religion, and he wasn’t able to communicate with her for more than a decade. Stuckmann has since left the church, but the painful experience deeply affected him and became a central theme in Shelby Oaks, reflected in Mia’s search for her sister, Riley. He explained to Points of Reviews that his past influenced the movie in two key ways.
Growing up, my sister was disfellowshipped, and I didn’t see her for more than a decade. The film’s theme of relentlessly searching for a lost loved one really resonates with that personal experience.
Stuckmann went on to explain that his own negative experiences with controlling religious groups also influenced the story. He believes the Jehovah’s Witnesses function as a cult, manipulating and controlling the beliefs of their members. He described the fear of being controlled by unknown leaders with power over your life. This feeling of being overseen and guided toward a negative outcome is mirrored in the characters of Mia and Riley, who seem destined for a dark fate.
Whether you enjoyed Shelby Oaks or not, it’s clear Stuckmann put a lot of himself into the film. He deserves credit for directing it and being willing to face whatever feedback came his way.
Will ‘Shelby Oaks’ Get a Sequel?

Neon
I’m really excited to see what Stuckmann does next with his filmmaking! He’s determined to keep creating, no matter what. And when asked about a potential sequel to Shelby Oaks, he hinted that it’s definitely a possibility – he even said he’s got some ideas! I’m hoping we get to see more from that world.
I’ve got ideas for both a prequel and a sequel. The prequel would explore how the amusement park originally came to be. As for the sequel, I don’t want to give anything away, but it would pick up immediately after the end of the current story – kind of like how ‘Halloween II’ continued right after the first film.
While we learn what’s coming next for Stuckmann, don’t miss Shelby Oaks when it becomes available on Hulu next month.
