Chris Pine has the right idea for Star Trek 4
As a long-time Star Trek fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Star Trek 4 for years. However, I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress and the constant delays. But recent developments in the Star Trek universe have given me renewed hope.
For several years, plans for Star Trek 4 have been under development without much progress beyond hiring new writers and directors. In contrast, Paramount+ managed to produce and finish Section 31 within a year. Although it may not boast the same elaborate features as a theatrical release, the special effects in shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Discovery have been impressive. Each episode of these series reportedly costs around $8 million for special effects. While Star Trek 4 will likely have higher costs due to star salaries, it doesn’t mean the visual effects need to be excessively grandiose.
A larger production isn’t necessarily superior. In fact, Chris Pine, the actor behind Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Kelvin Timeline films (as reported by Popverse through Trekmovie), shares this viewpoint. He believes a smaller-scale film would be more suitable.
I think we just make a much smaller film that’s more story-driven, more character-based, there’s less shit exploding, and maybe do it that way.”
The next Star Trek film doesn’t have to be a blockbuster production, and given that it’s been over eight years since the last installment, fans might be open to a smaller-scale Star Trek 4 as the possible conclusion for the series.
These exceptional Star Trek episodes feature minimal special effects and exclude starship battles, weapon use, and numerous explosions. Notable examples include “The Inner Light” from The Next Generation, “The Sound of Her Voice” from Deep Space Nine, and “Doctor’s Orders” from Enterprise. Instead, they focus on developing the characters, resulting in captivating stories that are frequently regarded as the best of Star Trek.
Why not let Star Trek 4 follow the same approach if it’s the last film for this crew and cast? Spend more time showing the team united instead of just focusing on individual adventures. It may not please everyone, but it will surely delight long-time fans eagerly anticipating the fourth movie!
