Chris Kamara shares health update on BBC Breakfast
Chris Kamara has shared a health update during an appearance on BBC Breakfast today (January 20).
2022 saw a well-known sports analyst and TV presenter who used to play football receive a diagnosis of speech apraxia, a neurological condition affecting the link between the brain and the mouth. As a result, Chris now speaks much more slowly due to this communication impediment.
He made an appearance on the show to discuss his role in the BBC Radio Leeds series titled “Bantam of the Opera“, where Bradford City fans collaborate with professional vocalists and orchestra musicians to create a performance commemorating Bradford being designated as the UK’s City of Culture for 2025.
Host Jon Kay inquired from Chris, a contestant on The Masked Singer’s fourth season, about how singing had impacted him given his condition. In turn, Chris playfully commented: “Actually, the positive aspect is that I couldn’t sing before, so it hasn’t changed anything for me.
In essence, singing significantly enhances vocal fluency, making it a beneficial method for voice recovery. For me, singing serves as rehabilitation when aiming to regain my voice. To restore my voice, consistent practice through singing is essential. Simply put, singing facilitates the process of recovering my voice.
Previously discussing his condition, Chris stated: “I once believed it shaped my identity, so let me apologize to all those with speech impairments. Please know, your condition does not define who you are as individuals. I found it difficult to discuss this topic because I was in denial and ashamed that I couldn’t speak fluently.
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lesley Garrett will additionally back the local choir, and enthusiasts of Bradford City have the opportunity to join in themselves by applying directly here.
The advancements made by the choir are set to be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds, and the production of “Bantam of the Opera” will be accessible via BBC Sounds starting in April.
BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One and iPlayer.
