Chris Kamara is making his TV comeback after his devastating speech apraxia diagnosis as he joins forces with close friend Ben Shephard
As a dedicated follower of Chris Kamara’s journey, it is nothing short of heartwarming to witness his triumphant return to television. For over two decades, his vibrant personality and infectious enthusiasm have graced our screens, making him football’s funniest pundit. His recent struggles with speech apraxia were a cruel blow, but the indomitable spirit of Kammy has prevailed yet again.
For more than twenty years, Chris Kamara entertained viewers with his humorous analysis on football, but unfortunately, circumstances made him reluctantly leave a profession that brought him joy.
Due to his life-altering diagnosis of speech apraxia in April 2022, the 65-year-old decided to step down from his role at Sky Sports.
However, The Daily Mail discloses an exciting development: The broadcaster will reappear on television, teaming up with his longtime friend Ben Shephard from “This Morning.”
The original duo, who initially crossed paths as hosts of Goals on Sunday back in 2010, are set to host a brand-new travel show.
Shephard, aged 49, mentioned that the upcoming program involves him and Kammy embarking on a journey across the United Kingdom in a motorhome, aiming to discover different regions of the country side by side.
Viewers who enjoy travelogues, particularly those produced recently, are likely to find this show incredibly appealing.
According to sources, the duo aims to emulate the popularity of Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo, and Fred Sirieix on their road trip series that has been a ratings sensation for ITV. This show features chefs Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo, and maitre d’ Fred Sirieix as they explore different countries and cities together.
As a long-time fan of British television, I must say that this month has been particularly exciting for me. Two shows, in particular, have stood out among the rest – “The Adventure Series” featuring Miriam Margoyles and “Travels with My Father” starring Jack Whitehall.
For the ex-professional soccer player, who at one point contemplated taking his own life due to the challenges of managing his apraxia, a neurological condition that impairs speech, a recovery would truly be something extraordinary.
Kamara mentioned that his unique Middlesbrough accent was gradually returning due to the treatment he’s received in Mexico, which has proven incredibly beneficial for him.
He stated: ‘I’ve visited there on two occasions, planning to return for a third. I’ve gained fluency in my conversation there, but I lack the speed of my earlier self – I used to speak at 300 miles per hour, and I’d love to regain that pace if possible. Therefore, I’m returning for additional treatment.’
Shepherd quipped, “I once got frustrated with Kammy because he’d speak without thinking, but now he thinks too much ahead. It’s all about striking a balance.”
The comments were made at Iain Dale’s All Talk event at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The pair haven’t started shooting the latest TV series yet. Their last joint appearance was on ITV’s Ninja Warrior in the year 2022, but the program was subsequently canceled.
Kamara credited his friend with aiding his recovery.
He said: ‘I’ve come through it with the help of the likes of Ben who have rallied around me. Now you think back and why was I thinking those thoughts? Get on and enjoy your life. And thankfully, I’ve been able to do that.’
