Chris Hughes contacted his former girlfriend, Jesy Nelson, after she shared the upsetting news that her twin daughters had been diagnosed with a serious medical condition.
On Sunday, Perrie Edwards, formerly of Little Mix, shared heartbreaking news on Instagram: her eight-month-old twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic condition affecting the nerves and muscles. She described the past few months as incredibly difficult while awaiting a diagnosis.
As a lifestyle expert, I often encounter discussions about health, and I wanted to share a clearer way to understand a challenging condition. It essentially impacts all the muscles in your body – everything from your arms and legs to even breathing and swallowing. This happens because of a loss of the nerve cells that control those muscles, leading to gradual weakness and muscle wasting. It’s a really comprehensive condition, affecting so much of daily life.
Oh my gosh, I was SO moved when I saw Jesy’s video! And then, Chris – Chris from Love Island, her ex! – commented the sweetest thing. He called her a ‘warrior’ and told her to be easy on herself, and sent prayers to everyone supporting her. I swear, I nearly cried! It just shows how much he cares, even after everything. I’m obsessed with them both, and it was just… perfect. Seriously, a warrior, she is!
Many fans applauded Chris for contacting his former partner when she was going through a difficult time, and his current girlfriend, Jojo Siwa, also offered her support.

Jesy and her partner, Zion Foster, became parents to twin daughters on May 15, 2025. The pregnancy was challenging, requiring Jesy to spend a lot of time in the hospital. The girls were born prematurely at 31 weeks and needed to stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) afterward.
In a video posted on Sunday, the singer shared that her mother was the first to realize the twins weren’t moving as much as they should have been.
She explained that after receiving their diagnosis, they needed immediate medical attention for a condition that significantly shortened their life. This meant constant hospital visits and fast-paced treatment, which were crucial to their survival.
Chris’ message of support saw a number of followers praise the star.
Okay, seriously, seeing Chris do that just melted my heart! Everyone on Instagram was losing it, replying to his comment and saying how incredibly sweet he is for taking the time to send such a lovely message. It just proves what we all know – he’s a genuinely wonderful person, sending all the love! I’m seriously obsessed with how kind he is.
It honestly means the world to me that you’re still sending your prayers, Chris. It really lifts my spirits! And Jesy, you’re exactly as wonderful as I always knew you were – such a genuinely kind person. Honestly, Chris, you’re a top guy, just a really lovely human being. Thank you both so much! xx
Jojo, Chris’ girlfriend and a star on Dance Moms, also shared her support for Jesy, sending “lots of love and prayers.”
Jesy and Chris ended their relationship on good terms and have remained friendly online since they broke up in 2020.

I’ve been so moved by this celebrity’s openness. She recently shared her incredibly emotional experience of finding out her mother’s diagnosis, walking us through everything from when her mom first expressed concerns, to figuring out what came next. It’s a really powerful and relatable story, and I think it’s so important to talk about these things.
They noticed the babies were having trouble feeding, but health professionals like health visitors and doctors explained that premature babies often reach developmental milestones at a different pace, and it wasn’t helpful to compare them to other children.
After a difficult three or four months filled with many appointments, our daughters have finally been diagnosed with a serious muscle condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA Type 1), she shared.
Jesy explained that the twins received treatment quickly, which is crucial with their condition. She also noted that unfortunately, there’s currently no cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
She explained that the girls received treatment over the last few weeks, and she’s incredibly thankful for it, as their lives depend on it.

It’s been a constant cycle of hospital visits, to the point where it feels like we live there. I’ve ended up learning how to use medical equipment, like breathing machines, and doing things a mother should never have to do for her child.
Jesy became very emotional as she shared that the past few months have been incredibly difficult. She described feeling like everything had changed completely, and confessed she felt as though she was mourning the future she had imagined for herself and her children.
I’m confident that with the proper support, my daughters will overcome any challenge and achieve incredible things.
She concluded her video by saying she wanted to share this information to help others and increase understanding of early diagnosis in children. She highlighted key signs to watch for, such as unusual floppiness in babies, a swollen belly, and fast breathing.
She highlighted the importance of the newborn heel prick test, explaining it can prevent serious health problems and potentially save a baby’s life and limbs.

I was so worried when I heard about Jesy’s pregnancy – her twins, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, arrived at just 31 weeks. It turned out she had twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, or TTTS, which is really rare and can be dangerous for both babies. It was a scary time, but thankfully they’re here now.
Before going home, the twins had been cared for in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Jesy recently shared that nothing can truly prepare parents for the experience of having a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), after their babies were born prematurely.
As a parent, there’s nothing more terrifying than feeling helpless, like you can’t shield your children from harm. It’s an incredibly overwhelming wave of emotion, a fear that just takes over when you worry about their safety.
It’s completely natural to want to comfort your crying baby, but when they’re in the NICU, it’s heartbreakingly difficult. All the wires, tubes, and medical equipment get in the way, and watching doctors and nurses examine them while you can’t even hold them is devastating.
Seeing them together again for the first time today was an incredibly special and moving experience – something I can’t quite put into words. They are two remarkably strong and inspiring young women with an amazing story.
In March 2025, while pregnant, Jesy experienced complications that required immediate medical attention. Doctors recommended she stay in the hospital until she was at least 32 weeks pregnant.
During the difficult time, Jesy’s partner, Zion, shared that he and Jesy—who was seven months pregnant during her treatment—had become closer and understood each other better.
He shared with OK! magazine that challenging times truly reveal the strength of a relationship. He believes this experience has deepened his connection with Jess, confirming they are perfectly suited for each other.
He said the couple had also tried to make the hospital as much of a home as possible.
We brought in a sofa that converts into a bed and put it next to the hospital bed, essentially creating a double bed for ourselves. It feels like we’ve moved in completely. The nurses were really pleased, saying it made the room look so comfortable and home-like.
Jesy revealed in January 2025 that she and her boyfriend, Zion, were expecting twins, despite recent rumors about a possible breakup.
Zion grew up in South London, raised in a Nigerian family by his mother, and was surrounded by Gospel music from a young age.
His football coach first got him into rap, exposing him to artists like Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, and Usher. Inspired, Zion started making his own music and posting it on SoundCloud.
