Chris Hemsworth’s “impressive” heist thriller debuts with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating

The new heist film, Crime 101, starring Chris Hemsworth as a notorious thief, is getting rave reviews. It currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes before even hitting theaters.

This movie, written and directed by Bart Layton, is based on Don Winslow’s 2020 book of the same title. It tells the story of a jewel thief who pulls off a string of robberies along the 101 freeway.

Chris Hemsworth plays Mike Davis, a famous thief wanted by the police for a string of crimes. While Detective Lou Lubesnick, played by Mark Ruffalo, is hunting him, Mike approaches insurance broker Sharon Colvin (Halle Berry) with a deal.

When Sharon first meets Mike, she doesn’t know what he does for a living. She’s instantly fascinated by his way of life and jokingly suggests she should pursue a similar career.

Mike talks Sharon, who feels overlooked at her job, into stealing expensive jewelry that her company insures, and together they pull off the heist.

In addition to the previously announced cast, Barry Keoghan plays Ormon, a criminal tasked with finding Mike, and Monica Barbaro joins as Maya. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Nick Nolte, Corey Hawkins, and Tate Donovan also star in the film.

The new film started with a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, according to the website’s recent announcement on X (formerly Twitter). While the score has since dipped to 88%, reviewers are calling the movie both “impressive” (according to Radio Times) and “sublime” (according to The Times).

Empire described the film as a stylish and exciting thriller, noting that its impressive cast helps overcome any weaknesses. Screen International compared its atmosphere to the sun-drenched, suspenseful films of Michael Mann.

Despite a sometimes predictable and slow-moving story, the talented actors and stylish visuals are enough to hold your attention, according to a review in TheWrap.

While some reviewers weren’t as impressed, they noted the film heavily borrowed from other works. The Associated Press put it this way: “This movie makes you question if it’s simply copying a better film. Crime 101‘s biggest flaw is that it imitates, rather than innovates.”

Crime 101 is released in cinemas on 13 February.
