A little-known fantasy movie starring both Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron is suddenly popular on streaming services around the world.
The film Snow White and the Huntsmancame out in theaters in 2012, directed by Rupert Sanders, who also directed Ghost in the Shell (2017) and The Crow (2024). That same year, Tarsem Singh released Mirror Mirror, a more colorful and lighthearted take on the Snow White story. Although critics weren’t impressed, Snow White and the Huntsmandid reasonably well in cinemas, which helped it find an audience on streaming platforms later on.
According to FlixPatrol, “Snow White and the Huntsman” is currently the 6th most popular movie on Disney+ worldwide as of March 6th. However, it’s not available on Disney+ in the U.S.; instead, viewers there can rent or buy it through platforms like Prime Video. While “Predator: Badlands” remains the top streamed movie on Disney+, “Snow White and the Huntsman” continues to be consistently popular this week.
Starting March 3rd, Snow White and the Huntsman quickly became a top 10 hit in several countries and is currently the most-watched film in Austria, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, and Monaco. Despite generally negative reviews – it has a 48% rating on Tomatometer, 52% on Popcornmeter, and 2.6/5 stars on Letterboxd – the film’s darker take on the classic fairytale and its famous actors are attracting viewers.
Alongside Chris Hemsworth as The Huntsman and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen, Snow White and the Huntsman features Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Sam Claflin as Prince William. The cast also includes Sam Spruell, Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, and Toby Jones. The film was popular enough to get a sequel, which added Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain to the ensemble.
I remember when Snow White and the Huntsman came out – it was a huge hit, bringing in almost $400 million on a $170 million budget. But the sequel, The Huntsman: Winter’s War (2016), just didn’t connect with audiences, earning only $165 million worldwide with an $115 million price tag. That pretty much killed any chance of further films in that series. Interestingly, looking back, the struggles of Snow White and the Huntsman seem eerily similar to what we’ve just seen with Disney’s recent Snow White release in 2025.
Disney’s recent live-action remake of Snow White, released last year, wasn’t successful in theaters. Despite some controversy and generally negative reviews (it only scored 39% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film flopped at the box office. While the movie theater landscape has changed since 2012, the original Snow White and the Huntsman was at least noteworthy for taking some creative risks.
In 2012, the film Mirror Mirror tried a new approach to the Snow White story, aiming for a very different look and feel than Disney’s classic. Snow White and the Huntsman took things even further, presenting a darker, more serious world and reimagining Snow White as a brave leader fighting for change. While the story itself isn’t always smooth, the movie still offers plenty of action, a strong cast, and impressive visuals.
