Chris Hemsworth Admits Thor: Love and Thunder Went Too Far With Comedy

Chris Hemsworth, known for playing Thor in Marvel movies, says the comedy in his most recent film, Thor: Love and Thunder, might have been overdone.

The Thor movies changed significantly in style, first with Kenneth Branagh’s Thor and then with Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. But Love and Thunder really leaned into Waititi’s comedic approach, relying heavily on improvisation. Many viewers and critics felt that the constant jokes weakened the film’s more serious moments, like Thor’s battle with Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) and Jane Foster’s (Natalie Portman) fight with cancer.

During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast, Chris Hemsworth discussed the negative reaction the cast and crew of a 2022 film received after its release. He explained, “It felt a bit like a Monty Python sketch – we may have gone too far with the humor, and then people reacted badly.”

Hemsworth explained that people questioned why his portrayal of Thor had become so silly. In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, he admitted he got carried away with the comedic improvisation and ended up becoming a caricature of himself. He felt his performance in the fourth Thor movie didn’t quite work out as planned.

Before the lighter tone of Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor was portrayed as much more somber in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Those films showed him struggling with real sadness and regret after Asgard was destroyed and he failed to stop Thanos. This makes the shift to the more comedic, romantic style of Love and Thunder feel especially noticeable for viewers.

Okay, so after Love and Thunder definitely left the door open for more Thor – especially with his new daughter, Love – Chris Hemsworth is officially back as the God of Thunder in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday event. And the first trailer? Let me tell you, it’s a very different Thor than we saw in Love and Thunder. We’re talking a return to the more serious, battle-ready Thor we knew from Infinity War. It looks like things are about to get really intense.

Chris Hemsworth won’t be alone in this new project. Chris Evans, a frequent co-star in Marvel movies, is returning as a different version of his popular character, Captain America. Plus, Robert Downey Jr., fresh off an Oscar win, will play Doctor Doom, the famous villain from the Fantastic Four stories, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The upcoming film, Doomsday, will include many well-known Marvel characters, including those from Wakanda, the Fantastic Four, and even some X-Men from the recent Fox films. Before Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday, fans can enjoy a new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, which will be released this summer.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
