Season 51 of Saturday Night Live is currently airing with a fresh lineup of hosts and new performers. Many familiar faces from last season are returning, including Chloe Fineman, known for her incredible impressions. Fineman, who is starting her sixth season on the show, recently shared that she originally auditioned using her Reese Witherspoon impression – and finally got to meet the actress herself, bringing things full circle.
The Summer of 69 actress has been known to impersonate everyone from JoJo Siwa to Timothée Chalamet. Sometimes her impressions are met with some criticism, but most times they are a slam dunk, and Fineman recently discussed on Late Night With Seth Meyers what it was like to do an impression of a celebrity to their face–because it had apparently happened backstage with the Legally Blonde actress just minutes before:
I just met her, and honestly, I was completely starstruck! I immediately thought she was adorable, and I blurted out something ridiculous like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re so cute!’ Then I realized how silly I sounded and just ended up saying, ‘Oprah loves you!’ It was a total fan moment.
Reese Witherspoon isn’t surprised that actress Sarah Fineman does impressions of her. Fineman is a big fan and has performed the Witherspoon impression on several shows, including Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, and Ellen. She’s even tackled Witherspoon’s characters, like Madeline Mackenzie from Big Little Lies and Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, which caught Witherspoon’s attention.
In 2020, the actress known for Cruel Intentions asked a cast member from Saturday Night Live—following their first full season on the show—to host a virtual Legally Blonde reunion. She chose them because of their popular and widely shared impressions of Reese Witherspoon.

Honestly, she makes a really good impression. It has to be strong – it’s what got her the job on Saturday Night Live. From what Seth Meyers said in their interview, she’s actually improved even more over the last five years. It’s lucky, then, that this meeting with Reese Witherspoon came as a surprise.
The actress from Despicable Me 4 previously talked on The Tonight Show about how celebrities react when she does impressions of them, explaining that…
After I do my impressions, I immediately worry about whether they were good or if I embarrassed myself. Then, if I’m lucky, I’ll get a direct message on Instagram from the celebrity I impersonated – it’s a little blue checkmark letting me know it’s them. But I have no idea what they’re going to say, and that feels incredibly important, like getting a message directly from a very powerful person.

Peacock TV costs as little as $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. While you can watch Saturday Night Live live on NBC at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time, you can also stream it live with a Peacock subscription.

She then mentioned that Reese Witherspoon had messaged her, complimenting one of her impressions.
It’s clear that Reese Witherspoon enjoyed Sarah Fineman’s impression of her in person just as much as she did when she saw it online. I truly believe Fineman is one of the best impressionists Saturday Night Live has featured in years, and I’m excited to see what other characters she takes on this season.
