Chiliz OG Esports acquisition: $OG Fan Token powers new competitive era

OG Esports and Chiliz have partnered in a deal where Chiliz now owns 51% of OG. With Xavier Oswald returning as CEO and Socios.com supporting the $OG Fan Token, fans are hopeful that OG will return to its winning ways.

OG Esports, the two-time champions of The International Dota 2 tournament, has been majority-owned by Chiliz Group, a leading blockchain company, which now holds a 51% stake.

Chiliz, the company behind Socios.com and its Fan Token platform, is investing in OG esports teams to grow their operations and boost fan involvement using the $OG Fan Token. These Fan Tokens are a new opportunity for esports teams, allowing them to build stronger relationships with fans and create new income streams beyond typical sponsorships.

Chiliz started by working with famous soccer clubs like FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, but has since moved into esports, partnering with the team OG. Today, the Chiliz Group collaborates with over 100 sports organizations through its Socios app.

Leadership shake-up at OG Esports

Following the acquisition of OG Esports by Chiliz, Xavier Oswald, a former co-founder of OG, is returning to the organization as its new CEO.

OG’s co-founders and two-time Dota 2 International champions, Johan “n0tail” Sundstein and Sébastien “Ceb” Debs, will now focus on a new initiative designed to improve the team’s long-term competitive success.

From 2018 to 2020, Xavier Oswald led revenue generation at OG, overseeing partnerships with major brands like Red Bull, Steelseries, and BMW.

Oswald played a crucial role in OG’s move into cryptocurrency and NFTs, establishing a partnership with Socios that led to the creation of the $OG Fan Token. This token will celebrate its fifth anniversary in December 2025.

Socios.com takes over $OG Fan Token

With the recent acquisition, Socios.com is now the only place to get $OG Fan Tokens. You can buy these tokens by purchasing the Chiliz cryptocurrency, $CHZ, through the Socios.com app.

As a gamer, I’ve always loved that OG focuses on building a strong community and trying new things. Chiliz’s CEO, Alex Dreyfus, recently pointed out that since 2020, Fan Tokens have actually proven they can be valuable – not just for fans, but also in creating real engagement and economic opportunities. It’s cool to see them backing that up!

As a huge fan, I’m so excited about this! Seeing how successful OG has been with their $100 million fan token system really proves how powerful fan tokens can be. This new development feels like the next big step – they’re calling it ‘Fan Tokens 2.0,’ and it’s going to be amazing to see what they do with it!

Chiliz reports that OG has become the first esports Fan Token to reach a market value of over $100 million, fueled by growing worldwide interest in digital fan collectibles.

The $OG Fan Token gives fans special perks like the ability to vote on things like new merchandise, plus VIP access and a direct connection to OG’s Esports teams.

Johan “N0tail” Sundstein, a co-founder of the renowned OG Esports, stated, “We at OG and Chiliz both believe in the importance of passion, openness, and the strength that comes from building strong communities.”

OG has a history of groundbreaking achievements, from winning championships two years in a row to being the first team to compete with AI in a public match. This new partnership will help us continue to innovate and stay true to who we are as an organization.

OG’s legacy in esports

As a big OG fan, I’m really excited about the Chiliz acquisition! Beyond just the $OG Fan Token, it seems like this will give the team a serious boost and help them compete even better internationally. Ceb himself said it’s like the start of a whole new era for the team, and I totally agree – it feels like a fresh start and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish!

We’re aiming to regain our prominence in the world of sports and excite both current and future fans. Thanks to the support of Chiliz, we now have the resources to create a strong, long-term project.

OG Esports began in 2015, initially gaining prominence through its highly successful Dota 2 team, led by founders N0tail and Ceb. Between 2016 and 2017, they won four major Dota 2 tournaments, and then made history in 2018 and 2019 by winning The International championship two years in a row – a first for any team. For its first six years, OG focused exclusively on Dota 2 competition.

After 2021, OG Esports began to expand and explore other esports titles starting with VALORANT.

OG Esports has teams competing in six popular games: Dota 2, Counter-Strike, EA FC, Marvel Rivals, Honor of Kings, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB).

OG Esports’ push to expand

Although OG is beloved by Dota 2 fans for its past successes, it hasn’t yet reached widespread recognition in the broader esports world. Their Counter-Strike 2 team is currently ranked #30 globally, and historically, it’s been the second most successful team within the OG organization.

RosterEarningsPercentage
CS:GO (OG Academy)$7,000.000.02%
CS:GO / CS2$1,328,4893.43%
Dota 2$37,306,54596.22%
Dota 2 (OG Seed)$52,6000.14%
Rocket League$58,9000.15%
Super Smash Bros$6,8470.02%
VALORANT$2,8610.01%
VALORANT (OG LDN UTD)$10,5700.03%

Almost all of OG’s total prize money – 99.8% – has come from their Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2 teams.

If the recent purchase by Chiliz signals a fresh start for OG Esports, fans might be about to see the team return to its former glory. This could be the start of a new, successful chapter for the organization.
