Children’s TV icons Dick and Dom respond to woke Gen Z backlash over their ‘cruel’ pranks on In Da Bungalow as they reveal why they’ll never revive beloved Noughties show

Dick & Dom In Da Bungalow was a huge hit with Millennials, becoming a defining part of their childhoods as they watched it religiously every weekend.

Recently, TV hosts Richard McCourt, 49, and Dominic Wood, 47, have faced criticism for their on-air jokes. A video went viral showing them telling a young girl she would get a pony, then immediately taking the promise back.

Younger generations, Gen Z, are shocked by a popular show from the 2000s, calling it unkind, but Millennials defend it as simply lighthearted entertainment.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the comedic pair stood by their joke, with Dominic explaining it was “just a bit of harmless fun.”

It was simply fun and meant to be lighthearted – purely for entertainment! She and the other children on the show genuinely enjoyed themselves and had an incredible experience.

After the show ended and we were off the air, that girl was laughing so hard she was crying. She understood it was all meant as a joke.

The pair, working with Google Gemini on a campaign to assist renters with their security deposits, acknowledge that their previous antics wouldn’t be acceptable by today’s standards.

‘I think it’d be different,’ Richard mused.

Dominic explained that any change wouldn’t be drastic, but he doesn’t believe they would even consider it.

‘Even if someone said, could you do a one-off and bring it back, I think we’d probably say no.

Nostalgia is always a gamble. When you revisit something from the past, it’s hard to recapture exactly how people remember it, and it might not resonate with them the way you’d hoped.

There are times when it’s best to leave things as they are, and I believe that’s what happened with the Bungalow project.

Dominic pointed out that he doubted the show would appeal to today’s younger viewers, explaining that he didn’t think they could focus for a full two hours.

These days, our attention spans are so short – we typically move on after just three seconds. It used to be that we could easily spend two hours relaxing and letting our minds wander, but now it’s much harder to do that.

The pair have moved away from children’s television, with Dominic recently reinventing himself as a home improvement specialist.

Dom, a 46-year-old renovating his home, has gained over 500,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok (@the_houseofwood) by sharing funny and helpful videos of the process.

He took up the hobby in 2020, during the Covid lockdowns, after he and his wife, Sandi, purchased a 1930s house in Surrey for their family.

When they finally moved in, restrictions due to social distancing made it difficult to find the contractors and workers usually needed for renovations and home improvements.

Dominic and Richard are teaming up once more with their new show, Dick & Dom in Da Rented Flat, to offer advice and support to renters trying to get their deposits back.

With the busy moving season approaching and major changes to rental laws on the way thanks to the Renters’ Rights Bill, Google has released new research explaining why many renters don’t get their security deposits back.

Dick & Dom in Da Rented Flat brings the comedy duo back together as they navigate the challenges of renting a home. The show demonstrates how Google’s Gemini AI can help even beginners tackle simple home repairs, saving them money in the process.
