As a total cinema devotee, I’ve been hearing amazing things about Jason Momoa’s new series, Chief of War. Everyone’s really praising how authentically it portrays native Hawaiians – especially the fact that they’re using the Hawaiian language to tell the story of the island’s early colonization. The show also gets points for the traditional costumes – and, let’s be honest, in Momoa’s case, that means a good look at his backside! Apparently, there’s a lot of that happening behind the scenes too, which is hilariously awesome. No complaints from me, honestly! It sounds like a really respectful and entertaining show, and I’m eager to check it out. I’ve heard it’s visually stunning.
Justin Chon, producer and director of Chief of War, recently took to Instagram to post his favorite memories from the show, now that its run on the 2025 TV schedule has concluded, and it’s available to stream in full with an Apple TV+ subscription. However, Chon’s favorite memories seemed to carry a certin theme that looked just like Jason Momoa’s ass, as every image and video included in the gallery included a shot of the actor’s butt, and seemingly without Momoa’s knowledge always in play.

As Chon points out, the show could easily have been titled Cheeks of War, and these pictures make that hard to disagree with. Although some of the photos are obviously intended as humor – Momoa even reportedly had “Yum Yum” written on his rear as a joke – others appear to have been taken by the director without Momoa’s knowledge while he wasn’t aware he was being filmed.
To be honest, I’ve seen Jason Momoa’s glutes more than I probably should have, and it’s got me wondering a few things. Did Momoa and the other actors specifically train their backsides for the roles? Let’s face it, not everyone naturally has a rear that looks good on camera. I imagine Momoa and others worked with trainers to get in shape, focusing on all parts of their bodies, to be fully prepared for filming.
Did this apply to every part of his physique? We’re aware Momoa isn’t a huge fan of intense workouts, despite his willingness to shave his head and get temporary tattoos for the show. It’s possible glute exercises weren’t out of the question, then.

I think, given that Jason Momoa and many of the other actors don’t wear much clothing in Chief of War, Justin Chon could have highlighted different parts of their bodies. He could have gone with Abs of War or Thighs of War, but I suppose that wouldn’t have been as amusing because it wouldn’t have been as truthful.
The most notable piece in the gallery is a brief video showing Momoa sitting on a cooler – seemingly intended for the director’s drinks – with his bare buttocks exposed. The camera then focuses on Momoa as he… well… adjusts his outfit. Even Jason Momoa found it amusing, responding with laughter in the comments, saying:
Momoa also responded: That video. U lil shit. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The beginning of the video showed Jason Momoa playfully resting his cheeks on the director’s drinks. However, the remainder of the footage focused on Justin Chon. In a different comment, Momoa also referred to Chon as a “faka,” a Hawaiian slang term that translates to “fucker.”
Okay, so he’s definitely joking around, but I also get the sense he’s playfully ribbing his director. It seems the director is being a little *too* controlling about how things are shared – like, really insistent on managing his image. It’s a funny dynamic, honestly. It’s like he’s pushing back against all that assertiveness, but in a lighthearted way. I’ve seen that happen on sets before.
