In a recent statement, the producer of Chicago P.D., Gwen Sigan, justified the minimal portrayal of Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess’ wedding in the season 12 finale, explaining her reasoning behind this creative choice.
According to TV Line, Sigan discussed the recent episode, explaining why Burgess and Ruzek’s wedding was kept in the background. She stated that the episode had more significant issues at stake compared to the wedding, making it essentially a Voight-centric episode. Sigan also disclosed that this decision stemmed from the intense emotional turmoil between Voight and Chapman, and it was crucial to portray both sorrow and joy in contrast. Read Sigan’s insights below:
Will we see the parts of Burgess and Ruzek’s wedding we didn’t?
It’s unlikely that we’ll revisit the wedding, though there might be a scenario where we could, I’m just skeptical about it.
With the episode titled “Vows,” why not show the vows and were any written?
We pondered deeply over composing the vows undoubtedly. As we were piecing together these intertwined narratives, this turned out to be a high-stakes scenario for Voight and his entire team. In numerous aspects, this episode truly belonged to Voight, and we desired to harmonize it with this wedding, yet achieving the perfect balance was challenging. We strove for the right atmosphere.
In order to effectively contrast the deeply emotional conclusion in Chapman (Sara Bues) and Voight, we aimed to incorporate both the sorrow that followed and the joy of what’s ahead, as well as the motivation behind Voight’s actions, so that viewers could experience happiness while simultaneously feeling heartbroken. However, it seemed that the sweetness of their vows didn’t quite align with the intended emotional contrast.
It seemed a bit abrupt, which is why our decision led us towards focusing more on the dialogue between Chapman and Voight, making it more engaging.
So those vows, could we possibly see them at some point in some capacity?
Absolutely, it’s clear that nothing was fired from our side. They weren’t hit either, as far as we know. So, they’re not here just waiting for us to display them. But then again, who can predict what might happen in the coming season? After all, anything could potentially unfold.
