The TV show Community is incredibly popular and people love to watch it over and over again, which is why fans have been hoping for a movie for years. While most of the original cast is expected to return, Chevy Chase won’t be involved. He’s openly said he didn’t enjoy his time on the show, and this has caused tension with some of his former co-stars. In fact, they reportedly refused to participate in his new documentary, and the director admitted it was difficult to get anyone from Community to agree to an interview.
A new CNN documentary called I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not—a reference to his opening line on Saturday Night Live—will debut on New Year’s Day as part of the 2026 TV lineup. The film explores both Chase’s personal life and his career, including conflicts with fellow actors, such as those from the show Community. Getting people from Community to participate proved difficult, and despite nearly securing an interview with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, the documentary director, Marina Zenovich, wasn’t able to make it happen, as she explained to Variety.
Everyone I asked turned me down. I even met Dan Harmon at a film screening and got his contact information, which I was really thrilled about. But unfortunately, he said no as well.
Chevy Chase played Pierce Hawthorne for the first four seasons of Community, but left the show after disagreements with the production team and reports that he used a racial slur. Since then, Chase has made negative comments about his time on the show. Joel McHale and Yvette Nicole Brown both publicly defended the series in response, so it’s understandable that Chevy Chase wasn’t included in the recent documentary and that the rest of the cast, including creator Dan Harmon, were reluctant to discuss him.
Despite the challenges, Zenovich still had some good news regarding the documentary’s community segment. She shared that the series’ director, Jay Chandrasekhar, had agreed to be involved, which would have drastically changed the film if he hadn’t.
I really hit the jackpot with Jay Chandrasekhar. He’s a fantastic performer, and he wasn’t afraid to take risks. If he hadn’t agreed to participate, I would have been in serious trouble.
It’s unclear exactly what Chevy Chase’s documentary will cover regarding Community, or what details Dev Patel Chandrasekhar will share, including his reaction to Chase’s past statements. The documentary might offer a look back at Chase’s time on the show and reveal how his colleagues perceived him. Regardless, this part of the documentary promises to be quite interesting.
As we’ve discussed, Chevy Chase won’t be appearing in the upcoming Community movie. There’s no release date set yet, so we don’t know when it will come out. It’s unlikely his character, Pierce, will be mentioned, as Chase hasn’t been involved with the show since season four. However, we’ll have to wait and see for sure.
The Chevy Chase documentary will premiere at 8 p.m. ET on January 1, 2026 on CNN.
