Cher’s real name is the world’s dullest surprise: 3 more exciting things about the singer
As a cinephile with a penchant for Hollywood’s golden era and a soft spot for the iconic, I find Cher’s memoir to be a captivating read, reminiscent of an old-school Tinseltown tell-all. The revelation about her birth name confusion is just one of the many fascinating tidbits in a life that has been as dynamic and multifaceted as her costumes on stage.
Cher always thought her real name was Cherilyn. Then she found out it was Cheryl.
The end.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share a fascinating tidbit from Cher’s latest memoir, “Cher: The Memoir, Part One.” Instead of just skimming the surface, the legendary singer, actor, and epitome of fabulousness has dived deeper into her life story, offering us more insight into her journey.
It wasn’t until much later that I realized “Cherilyn” wasn’t actually my name; instead, I opted to legally adopt the simpler moniker “Cher,” as E! Online shared.
It was at this point that the singer known as “Believe” found out that her mother, Georgia Holt, mistakenly listed “Cheryl” on the birth certificate instead of the intended name Cherilyn, which was a blend of Lana Turner’s daughter’s name “Cheryl” and Holt’s own mother’s name “Lynda.
In response to what Cher said was her shock, her mom had a fitting response: “Give me a break.”
As Page Six outlines, Holt told her daughter, “I was only a teenager, and I was in a lot of pain.”
Moreover, no big surprise. The recently released memoir by Cher offers even more intrigue. She discusses her romantic ties with Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman. According to Page Six, she identifies Val Kilmer as the sole individual to have ended their relationship.
Here is a trio of other little-known but much more interesting Cher facts:
- Cher’s early childhood was tough. Her father abandoned the family not long after she was born, and she was briefly placed in a home for children and unwed mothers, according to The Times’ review of the memoir.
- Cher tells in the memoir how, as a 15-year-old, she made out with actor Warren Beatty, 25, in his swimming pool. She had borrowed Natalie Wood’s bathing suit. Wood was Beatty’s paramour at the time and co-star in “Splendor in the Grass.”
- Another tidbit she revealed to “Today”: She once turned to comedy legend Lucille Ball for relationship advice. “I told her, ‘Lucy, I want to leave Sonny and you’re the only one I know that’s ever been in this same situation. What should I do?’” Ball, in colorful language, advised that she exit the marriage.
