Cher’s Iconic Catsuit Sells for $162,500
The iconic outfit worn by Cher fetched a price significantly higher than anticipated, reinforcing her standing as one of the world’s foremost stage and screen performers.
During the Julien’s Auctions event titled “Bold Luxury: The Limelight Edit,” held in Beverly Hills on Thursday, competition for the 200+ items up for sale became quite intense at times.
Among the many captivating moments at the glamorous gathering, none quite compared to the iconic “If I Could Turn Back Time” ensemble worn by Cher on stage, masterfully crafted by Bob Mackie. This very costume stirred up quite a buzz when it first made its appearance.
In the initial music video of her popular 1989 track, she showcased an exposing outfit consisting of a sleek, form-fitting black bodysuit, or as some call it, a catsuit, with mesh openings, usually accompanied by a black leather jacket and high boots that extend to the knee.
Initially predicted to be sold between $60,000 and $80,000, an intense bidding competition arose during the thrilling live and internet auction, leading to the Cher collection being sold for a staggering $162,500.

The Cher collection was expected to be sold between $60,000 and $80,000. But a fierce bidding competition emerged during the exhilarating live and online auction, pushing its final price up to an impressive $162,500.
The Limelight Edit showcases an exclusive assortment of legendary items, including garments previously owned by celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Victoria Beckham, Amy Winehouse, and Britney Spears. This collection also includes high-end fashion from designers such as Hermès, Chanel, Giambattista Valli, and others.

Following her appearance in the “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video, filmed aboard the USS Missouri, where she was depicted astride a cannon and with visible tattoos on her backside, the provocative outfit sparked a surge of debate.
Indeed, certain military personnel criticized the video, produced by the late Marty Callner, and various family groups objected to its airing, as they found it disrespectful towards the Navy, considering it inappropriate.
Following the protests, several TV networks decided against airing the performance because of the singer’s suggestive attire, with MTV among them in July 1989.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement when the colossal music TV station finally relented and agreed to air Cher’s video only post-9 PM. However, by then, the ensuing controversy had already catapulted her into a must-see sensation.
Diane Warren, in conjunction with Guy Roche, penned and co-produced a pop-rock/soft-rock tune especially for Cher.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but rave about the album that beautifully harmonizes guitar, piano, and drum beats! Critics across the board have been praising it, particularly its top-notch production quality and the outstanding vocal prowess of none other than the legendary Cher.
Some people, both critics and fans, viewed it as one of the standout tracks on her 1989 studio album Heart of Stone, which happened to be her nineteenth release during her career.
For her career, reaching the top 10 position in the U.S. charts with Heart of Stone marked a significant achievement since it was her debut solo record to do so.

The album would also top the charts in Australia and rise as high as number seven in the UK.
In a different phrasing: The song “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher reached the third position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became her first number-one single in Australia. This hit song also made it to the top 10 charts in various countries like Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
For many years, this multiple Grammy and Oscar winner has consistently taken the stage wearing designs by Bob Mackie, which she wore during her 2002 Farewell Tour, the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards, and her 2014 tour.
Originally achieving recognition in 1965 as part of the Sonny & Cher partnership, which included her as the wife, Cher (originally known as Cheryl Sarkisian), now at 78 years old, has since had an extensive career spanning over six decades in singing, performing, and acting.
