Cher reveals Tina Turner asked for help on how to leave abusive husband Ike in heartbreaking memoir
As a lifestyle expert with decades of personal and professional experience, I find it incredibly moving and inspiring to read about the bond between Cher and Tina Turner. Their friendship, which spanned over five decades, is a testament to their strength, resilience, and mutual support during challenging times.
It’s been shared that Cher stepped in to aid Tina Turner during the late 1970s, as she sought assistance in escaping her violent marriage with Ike Turner.
Believe icon Cher, 78, had a nearly five decade long friendship with Turner, who died aged 83 in 2023, and wrote in new tome Cher: The Memoir, Part One how Turner had begged for her help to leave Ike after another beating.
In one of our filming sessions, Turner approached me prior to going on set, seeking assistance to conceal a bruise on her arm since it wasn’t suitable for the cameras. I informed her that I had a solution that would do the trick.
Next, she inquired from Cher about the circumstances surrounding her divorce from Sonny Bono, who was her husband from 1969 until they parted ways in 1975.
Cher wrote: ‘I looked at her and told her, “I just walked out and kept on going.”
The singer recalled how Turner’s plea reminded her of when she asked Lucille Ball how to leave Bono.
She wrote: ‘I called Lucille Ball to ask for her advice. I told her, “Lucy, I want to leave Sonny and you’re the only one I know that’s ever been in this same situation. What should I do?”
Lucy and her spouse gained widespread recognition due to their joint appearances on television. However, it was also known that he was quite notorious for his womanizing ways. Eventually, Lucy decided to end the relationship.
In the year 1972, Turner and Cher initially crossed paths during their appearance on the Sonny & Cher show. Notably, they sang a rendition of Shirley & Company’s “Shame Shame Shame” together on The Cher Show in 1975.
Turner would divorce Ike in 1978.
In October 2023, Cher reminisced about her last meeting with the Queen of Rock prior to her passing in May of the same year at the age of 83, recalling it as a time filled with joy and laughter.
The Oscar winner had traveled to Switzerland where Tina had lived since 1995.
‘I got to see her. She was lying on the chaise and said, “I’m tired,”‘ she told People.
Later on, she remembered that for about two hours we were darting all over the house, and she was bursting out with uncontrollable laughter.
She mentioned that the Proud Mary singer simply required conversation and venting, as she’s been struggling with various health issues such as a stroke, intestinal cancer, and kidney failure.
‘That’s the Tina that I loved. We had the best time and talked about the old times.’
Cher and Tina entered the music industry around the same period. They were once married to men who were significantly older than them, but those relationships ended in divorce.
In the ’60s and ’70s, Turner and Ike gained recognition through The Ike & Tina Show; however, it was discovered later that behind the scenes, Ike was subjecting Tina to horrific abuse.
In Knoxville, a short-lived love affair with saxophonist Raymond Hill resulted in her first child, Craig. Later, musician and singer Ike Turner invited her to be part of his band and eventually, his life.
In the following period, there emerged years that were sadly marked by incidents of domestic violence. She recounts those times as being characterized by injuries such as swollen lips, bruised eyes, dislocated limbs, fractured bones, and mental anguish, which unfortunately became a daily occurrence in her life.
‘I tried to keep myself sane while managing his insanity,’Turner said.
However, due to the emotional toll caused by Ike’s abuse and infidelities, Tina found herself battling depression and despair. In an agonizing bid for escape, she overdosed on 50 sleeping pills in her dressing room prior to a performance in 1968.
In her 45th year, Tina found more achievement than she had known during her youth when her 1984 album, titled “Private Dancer,” was released, taking time to do so.
In 1986, Turner started a relationship that eventually led to a sold-out tour success, Grammy awards, and even love – all this with Erwin Bach, the German record executive whom she later married in 2013 and remained with until her passing.
In a 2008 interview with Oprah Winfrey, the two pals looked back at their first meeting.
The very first time Tina and I collaborated, I had anticipated encountering someone like Tina Turner in the studio, as explained by the former variety show host.
However, upon her arrival, she was dressed quite elegantly in a small silk blouse, pants, and high heels. Conversing with her, I discovered my speech was more fitting for a sailor, while Tina’s manners were incredibly refined; she spoke as if she were a true lady.
She continued to gaze at me as if questioning, “Wow, where have you suddenly appeared from?”, which was Cher’s observation about their contrasting personalities.
Speaking about her forthcoming performance, the If I Could Turn Back Time singer expressed, ‘I recall I mused, “I will need to dance alongside Tina Turner.”‘
‘Do you know what that feels like?’ she asked.
‘It’s like dancing with a hurricane.’
In 1999, they worked together once more on “Proud Mary,” this time with Elton John for VH1’s Divas Live event. They met backstage again in 2008 during the Grammy Awards, and it was Cher who introduced Beyoncé with whom Tina performed a medley that included “Proud Mary.
