In her new memoir, Cher shared that she was sexually assaulted when she was 17 years old, by the boyfriend of a friend’s roommate.
The 79-year-old, two-time Grammy winner was dating Sonny Bono, her future husband, but she was afraid to share the news with him about what had occurred.
Cher recalled that Sonny was busy at the recording studio one night in 1963, so she stayed with a friend instead of going home.
She remembered feeling bored and a bit scared, so she stayed overnight with her friend Josita, who she used to live with. Josita shared a two-bedroom apartment with her boyfriend, Ulle, and another woman.
We all went back to her apartment after spending the evening together. I ended up falling asleep on the couch while everyone else went to bed.
A few hours later, I woke up to find someone lying next to me, and they had their hand in my pants. For a moment, still groggy, I thought I was home, but then I realized I wasn’t.
It was dark, and I could barely make out the shape of a man. I was completely still, my heart pounding, until he shifted a little.
The musician explained that she pretended to be sleepy, then got up and went to the bathroom, not knowing what to do next. When she heard a door shut, she hoped he was gone, but as soon as she realized he was still there, she ran into Josita’s room, yelling.
Oh my gosh, it was SO close! Thankfully, her bestie is a super light sleeper – he literally jumped out of bed the second Cher burst into his room. Can you imagine?! He saved the day, honestly. I’m telling you, they’re meant to be!
Cher wrote that Ulle suddenly turned on the light and discovered their roommate’s boyfriend had come home with another woman. Seeing Cher on the couch, the boyfriend assumed it was okay to lie down beside her and touch her inappropriately.
She explained that she was so shaken up by the experience, it took her all night to relax. She was also afraid to tell Sonny what had happened, worried he might react violently towards the person involved.
Cher is currently dating Alexander Edwards, 39, and sources say they plan to get married before Cher turns 80 this year.
Sonny and Cher officially ended their 11-year marriage with a divorce on June 26, 1975. Sadly, Sonny passed away in 1998 at the age of 62 after a skiing accident.
Unfortunately, Cher had multiple unsettling experiences with men who abused their power, including strange encounters with the late music producer Phil Spector, as she has shared.
Cher met the songwriter in the early 1960s through her then-boyfriend, musician Antonino LoTempio.
He invited then 15-year-old Cher — born Cheerily Sarkisian — to meet Spector in his hotel room.
She described the music producer as someone many people idolized, but said she found his behavior strange and was uncomfortable with his intense staring, as she detailed in her memoir.
The famous musician remembered the shocking moment he checked her out and made a suggestive offer to her in French.
Cher wrote that a man asked her, with a smirk, if she wanted to sleep with him. She playfully responded that she’d consider it—for a price.
‘Without breaking a sweat, I gave him a look back and replied, “Oui, pour l’argent.”‘
She quoted from her book: ‘He was completely shocked. He didn’t expect me to grasp the question, much less be able to answer it.’
Cher also recounted an incident detailed in her memoir where Phil Spector improperly used a recording of her voice on a European single, years after they had worked together.
She became upset when she discovered Spector had broken their agreement and challenged him about it, but he responded with anger. Cher has said that he then tried to frighten her, and the situation escalated into physical violence.
The late composer allegedly pulled a gun on the superstar to drive his point home.
She recalled staring at Phillip with anger as he played with the object, and writing in her book that she’d told him, “Don’t mess with me, Phillip!”
“This is Cher, alright? Now, lower the gun and promise me you won’t ever do something like this with my songs again,” she said, showing no fear.
Cher wrote that Spector quickly apologised, but she felt uncomfortable in the situation.
Even though she didn’t believe he would actually shoot someone, she was still very angry about what happened.
The former music producer died in prison in 2021 from natural causes. He had been convicted of the second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson in 2003.
In her memoir, the celebrity disclosed that she had sex for the first time at age 14, motivated by a desire to get back at her boyfriend.
