Cher Pays Tribute to ‘Funny and Brave’ Ex Partner Val Kilmer After His Death

Cher has paid tribute to her ‘funny and brave’ ex partner Val Kilmer after his death aged 65. 

The Top Gun star passed away from pneumonia in Los Angeles on Tuesday after a long health battle.

As a lifestyle expert reflecting on a recent loss, I must share my heartfelt thoughts about Val. His passing left an indelible void in the lives of many, myself included. Among those who honored him with touching tributes was his former partner, Cher.

In the early ’80s, spanning from 1982 to 1984, a singer, then 78 years old, and an actor were romantically involved for a period of two years. Their relationship was somewhat unconventional due to their 13-year age difference, causing quite a stir in the Hollywood community during that time.

Back in November, I found myself on the receiving end of a breakup initiated by my beloved partner, Val. Despite my heart being completely captivated and enamored with him, it was he who decided to part ways.

On Wednesday, Cher paid homage to VALUS on social media by saying: ‘VALUS, we’ll miss you. You were hilarious, eccentric, a real pain sometimes, but an outstanding friend. The kids adored you. As brilliant as Mark Twain, you showed great courage during your illness.’

Val’s daughter Mercedes Kilmer confirmed his tragic death in a statement on Wednesday morning. 

Last November, on the Howard Stern Show, Cher shared details about her past relationship with Val while discussing her recently released memoir titled “Cher: My Memoir.

Howard inquired if men assume extraordinary sexual experiences due to being associated with Cher, and she promptly replied: ‘Indeed, and they do receive it.’

When asked for an explanation, she replied, “It was evident from their response,” leading Stern to inquire, “Who wouldn’t stick with you?

In a previous statement, she expressed: ‘Not many men, not many men.’ Subsequently, she clarified her feelings by saying: ‘Let me explain, I had deeply fallen for Val Kilmer, but unfortunately, he moved on.’

Cher explained that she had left because it seemed they were only intended to be together for a certain period. She also mentioned that he was quite young at the time.

In spite of their relationship coming to an end, Cher and Val continued to be close friends, with Cher providing her support as he fought against throat cancer.

In his autobiography, Val recounted that Cher provided support and positivity when he was hospitalized. Remarkably, she managed to lift his spirits even amidst a challenging period in his life.

Despite being in a critical state, he found himself admiring the paramedic, who looked strikingly like Gregory Peck – a man so good-looking it seemed like a Hollywood creation. Or, put simply, he remarked that even under the circumstances, she reminded him of a classic Hollywood heartthrob.

Despite having blood all over me, I managed a wink reminiscent of Groucho Marx’s, with a playful nod, “Hubba Hubba.

‘Cher was bashful to be busted but then couldn’t help laughing out loud at the audacity. 

In this moment, we were bantering about beauty and longing, yet I appeared as if I stepped off the set of a Tarantino film, Reservoir Dogs. Indeed, it felt like my life hung in the balance, but still, we burst into laughter before they silenced me with an oxygen mask.

After he was released from hospital, Cher allowed him to move into her Malibu guest house. 

After Cher manages to find a place within you, both mentally and emotionally, that connection remains eternal. For those fortunate enough to be her true friends, her unwavering affection and devotion continues to thrive, according to Val.

In the 80s, Cher confessed in 2018 that ‘when we shared a kiss, it felt like my head might just fly away from my body’.

In 2021, she opened up in more detail about the relationship, revealing where they met.

At a party thrown for my birthday by a friend, I encountered the person in question. She mentioned that she had invited him, implying that she believed either myself or her editing-professional friend would find him appealing.

We bonded over our shared sense of humor, always finding amusement in similar things. He often stayed overnight, and initially, our relationship was purely platonic. It developed over time, although it wasn’t a prolonged process, she noted.

Additionally, she acknowledged that their 13-year age difference was more significant in the past, as Val Kilmer first appeared on the big screen in Top Secret in 1984, which was also the year their relationship ended.

He followed that up with 1985’s Real Genius and 1986’s Top Gun and his career was fully launched. 

Cher added that she watched his 2021 documentary Val, and wrote to him after she watched it.
