Cher implies she had abortion days after wedding to Gregg Allman in new memoir

As an ardent fan of Cher, I find her life story to be nothing short of mesmerizing and inspiring. Her autobiography, Cher: The Memoir, has only served to deepen my admiration for this extraordinary woman.

According to reports, Cher hinted that she had a termination shortly following her marriage to Gregg Allman, her second spouse and member of the Allman Brothers band.

In the recently published first part of her two-part autobiography titled “Cher: The Memoir,” the 78-year-old music legend offers a glimpse into her personal relationships, unveiling aspects of her love life.

From 1975 to 1979, Gregg and Cher were married, but their union was often challenged due to Gregg’s struggle with heroin addiction.

In a quick turn of events, she found herself tying the knot with him shortly after discovering her pregnancy, having a wedding in Las Vegas only a few days later.

Yet, on the day following the wedding, Cher found a pile of white powder amidst Gregg’s possessions. Remarkably, this was despite her earlier efforts in helping him overcome his addiction.

In her writing, she expressed that due to her husband’s resurgence of drug problems and concerns about how her pregnancy might impact her career, she found herself at a crossroads and realized the decision she had to make clearly. She did not explicitly use the term ‘abortion’, but the implication was clear.

A single day following their wedding, Cher and Gregg found themselves in separate cities due to work commitments, which left her with a heavy, ominous feeling about their union. At that moment, she admitted, she was uncertain about the prospect of a future together.

That morning, she discovered a plastic bag filled with what appeared to be white powder inside the Dopp kit he had forgotten, which only served to heighten her concerns.

Cher noticed that such incidents often reveal the resilience of relationships, and unfortunately, she felt that hers wasn’t robust enough to withstand the strain, given that her own father struggled with heroin addiction as well.

Later on, she went to see her physician, who had developed a close friendship with her. This bond was forged over the course of treating her through two miscarriages and the birth of their mutual acquaintance, Chaz Bono – a child born to Cher during her marriage with Sonny Bono.

During my examination, he found some ovarian cysts and suggested, “I can handle this for you.” Over the years, I trusted him enough that if they were harmful, he would have said so directly: “You have cysts. I need to remove them.” Essentially, his offer made it clear to me that it was an option.

Reflecting on my pregnancy with Chas, I found myself confined to bed rest for a good four months, only leaving for essential check-ups. Yet, come Monday, I was required to be at work, and my heart yearned for the rhythm of singing and dancing that had become part of my routine.

Cher was responsible for her kid, mom, and sister. She realized she needed to choose a path, and she understood exactly what that decision entailed,” Cher stated.

It was more challenging not having Gregory to discuss it with, but I stood firm in my choice, and I felt incredibly thankful for my doctor’s empathy in helping me.

A few days passed, and then Cher learned that Gregg had initiated divorce proceedings. Not long after their Vegas wedding, which took place nine days earlier, Cher followed suit by filing for divorce herself.

In a swift change, Gregg made an effort to win Cher over again, ultimately achieving his goal after seeking treatment at a rehab facility and going through therapeutic sessions.

In the month of July, 1976, they warmly received their newborn son named Elijah Blue Allman. This was approximately a year and two months following the marriage ceremony of Cher and Gregg.

Despite the tension that arose due to Gregg’s battle with heroin addiction and his numerous efforts to quit, their bond persisted.

At a certain point, Cher expressed her exhaustion saying, “Gregory, I’m just so weary of doing this. I’m tired of accompanying you to rehab.” To which he responded, “I understand, but I continue attending.

Ultimately, his inner struggles became too powerful, leading to the collapse of their union. The separation took place in 1978 following a period where he experienced a paranoid psychosis, claiming to see armed men lurking in the garden, as described by Cher in her accounts.

I reached my limit here. Regardless of his current state, I don’t find him suitable for children’s company. A single incident was enough to make me cautious about the situation.

In retrospect, it’s clear that my behavior towards Gregory was somewhat irrational. I repeated the same actions, expecting them to lead to something new, but as they say, consistency is the first sign of madness.

According to Cher, being determined and headstrong is beneficial because it prevents her from giving up, but it also has its drawbacks. On one hand, it’s what brought her to where she is now; on the other, knowing when to stop can be equally important.

In 2017, at the age of 69, Gregg – a man who ended up marrying a total of seven times – passed away following a tough fight against liver cancer. Cher was among those who paid their respects at his funeral.
