Chelsea Handler’s Toxic Ex Revealed
Recently, Chelsea Handler stirred up interest as she discussed a ‘highly harmful’ past relationship with an unidentified former partner during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
The 49-year-old comedian shared with host Alex Cooper that she was her least authentic self during that relationship, confessing an unusual action she took upon their separation.
During the interview, Handler didn’t mention her former partner explicitly, but a source revealed to Page Six on Wednesday that she was discussing her previous relationship with renowned hotelier, André Balazs, aged 68.
From 2011 to 2013, she intermittently went out with Balazs, a wealthy individual worth approximately $700 million and the proprietor of famous landmarks like the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, as well as other popular locations worldwide.
DailyMail.com has reached out to Handler’s representatives for comment.
In their previous connection, she admitted that it was filled with mistrust and suspicion. For instance, she secretly checked his phone, he often stayed out late, and this would cause her to worry excessively about his whereabouts. She shared this during the latest episode of Call Her Daddy.
Handler — who recently hosted the Critics Choice Awards — added: ‘It was the worst version of me.’
When she finally became fed up with the ‘toxicity,’ Handler decided to initiate the breakup.
Instead, Handler confessed that during the separation, she carried out an unusually extreme act, which she considers the craziest thing she has ever done.
The Grammy-nominated individual admitted to Cooper that they knew they needed to end their relationship, but they desired for him to truly understand the impact of it.
The woman stated that she planted thirty-five linden trees along the driveway of her former partner’s estate in Upstate New York, ensuring that whenever the leaves turned colors, it would serve as a constant reminder of her presence.
According to Page Six, it was mentioned that Handler’s former partner, Balazs, is the owner of Locusts-on-Hudson – a well-known 76-acre property situated in Staatsburg, New York.
The opulent estate, complete with a functioning farm, can be found beside the Hudson River – a detail subtly suggested by Handler during their Call Her Daddy conversation.
She shared, “He possessed an immense passion that culminated in a large driveway, and I purchased thirty-five linden trees for him, which I believe were shipped over from Germany. It was quite lavish.
17 trees were lined up on both sides of his driveway, creating an enchanting tree-lined path. In the fall, their leaves would transform into vibrant hues, while in spring, they’d bloom, making the scenery absolutely stunning.
According to her, the ‘bizarre’ action she took had success since her former boyfriend consistently texted her exactly twice a year, as if on schedule.

Every autumn and every vernal equinox, he texts me, “It’s unbelievable that I’ve let you go. Fancy seeing those trees of yours again?” to which I respond, “Not at the moment.” (Handler stated)
In 2011, the relationship between the woman and Balazs, which was sometimes on and off, started following her brief romantic encounter with the rapper 50 Cent, who was then 49 years old.
Balazs is a well-known figure in the hotel industry, overseeing operations at The Standard Hotels, the prestigious Chateau Marmont, and London’s Chiltern Firehouse.
Currently, he serves as the CEO of André Balazs Properties. Previously, he was in a marriage with Katie Ford, who is the CEO of Ford Models, from 1985 to 2004. They have two children together, who are their shared offspring from that relationship.
In 2012, Handler and Balazs were seen at the Met Gala and several other high-profile red carpet events as a couple, during their two-year relationship.
Back in February 2013, the guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show expressed her deep affection for Balazs at that time.
The Chelsea Lately star inquired, “May we discuss my partner?” To which DeGeneres replied, “Of course! I hear he’s fantastic, and you adore him.
She then confessed that their relationship was ‘very rocky.’
During an interview with Oprah in March 2013, Handler revealed to the talk-show host that she had found her equal in Balazs.

She exclaimed, “I’ve found someone just as formidable as myself. Our differences are so stark. It seems he brings out a less intelligent side in me.
Handler also elaborated on their ‘rocky’ moments, which included several brief splits.
She shared that her partner and herself had discussions about sharing a life, but we’ve had our ups and downs, breaking up and reconciling on occasion. Now, we’re working on finding a way to make our lives work harmoniously together, as she expressed during her talk with Oprah.
Additionally, she disclosed that maintaining their long-distance relationship, which involved Balazs frequently traveling worldwide for work while Handler focused on comedy in Los Angeles, was extremely demanding.
She clarified, “When there’s a strong desire to spend time with another person, it becomes possible to arrange things accordingly, but what you don’t want is for the relationship to feel lopsided.
If I’m traveling to London on your behalf for a week for business and need to attend dinners and socialize, being entertaining and engaging, please make sure to respond accordingly.
In October 2013, Handler publicly announced during an episode of her talk-show Chelsea Lately on E! that she and Balazs had ended their relationship officially.
She playfully quipped to Mary McCormack, “Perhaps I might consider dating someone feisty.” Or, “She teased Mary McCormack by saying, ‘I might take up dating a strong-willed woman.’

Jo Koy was the last significant partner for the comedian, and they started dating in 2021 following more than ten years of camaraderie. However, their relationship came to an end in July 2022.
She discussed the heartbreaking split during her recent Call Her Daddy appearance.
The individual, expressing that she didn’t wish to end things, eventually made a decision to prioritize herself and refused to sacrifice her principles or her prospective future with Koy instead.
In the podcast, she expressed that her idea of a healthy mature relationship and his didn’t align, and it would’ve required her to relinquish all of her beliefs and values, which she was unwilling to do.
She pointed out that Jo’s ideas about their relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend were quite traditional, even outmoded, suggesting they wouldn’t function effectively, further noting that it was evident they held distinct perspectives on what it meant to be together.
On the podcast, Chelsea expressed that she faced a tough choice: either prioritizing a relationship at the expense of her personal well-being or maintaining her self-worth and mental balance – although using the term “sanity” might be an exaggeration. She admitted that she would have ended up compromising her personal values in this scenario.
Chelsea pondered over the impact her relationship had on her self-confidence and her capacity for emotional openness.
She shared that the most significant lesson from that relationship was discovering how to love again with openness, maturity, and health, and when she understood it wouldn’t last, she ended it gracefully without dwelling on the problems or negativity that might have occurred during their time together.

The comedian shared that she discovered her ability to embrace love and was reminded of the strong and powerful individual she is.
Chelsea stated that he assisted in reigniting her passion for her job, a period when she had become disinterested.
One key lesson she learned was that she could embrace love and allow herself to be open and exposed in a romantic connection.
She expressed that she was deeply in love with Jo and incredibly content, but unfortunately, they held contrasting values, which led her to end the relationship.
