Check out the first official image from The Wheel of Time season 3!

As a seasoned fan of epic fantasy series who has journeyed through the twists and turns of Robert Jordan’s “The Wheel of Time” books multiple times, I find myself both intrigued and puzzled by this first look at the upcoming third season. The poster presents an enigmatic image that seems to hint at the Aiel Waste and the characters’ impending journey there in accordance with the narrative of “The Shadow Rising.

Last year, the second season of “The Wheel of Time,” adapted from Robert Jordan’s extensive novel series, premiered on Amazon Prime Video. Although filming for season 3 finished quite some time ago, there have been few updates from Amazon regarding its upcoming content.

The current state is set to transform. Multiple cast members are jetting off to the 2024 Comic Con Experience in Brazil this coming weekend, where they’re anticipated to unveil some secrets about season 3. To build up excitement, the official Wheel of Time account on X/Twitter has recently disclosed the initial poster for the upcoming season. Check it out!

Behold before us is none other than the central figure, Rand al’Thor (portrayed by Josha Stradowski), the very embodiment of the Dragon Reborn, navigating a barren desert terrain littered with spears. This striking scene seems to be hinting at a hidden narrative.

Beware SPOILERS from The Wheel of Time books below

It’s quite plausible to infer that both Rand and the enigmatic lady are found within the vast, sandy expanse known as the Aiel Wasteland, a region inhabited by the Aiel folk. Notably, Rand’s birth mother belongs to this tribe. The upcoming third season of The Wheel of Time is set to adapt the fourth book in the series, The Shadow Rising, where the story follows Rand and his companions as they journey through the Aiel Wasteland to rally its inhabitants to his cause.

That’s about the only thing I’m sure of. I’m not certain who the woman is and I don’t think we’re supposed to know; otherwise they would have shown her face. In The Shadow Rising, prominent female characters who accompany Rand to the Waste include his Aes Sedai mentor Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), his friend Egwene (Madeleine Madden), and the Aiel woman Aviendha (Ayoola Smart). Of those three, the woman in the poster looks the most like Moiraine to me, but I’m not sure. If you have any ideas, please share them in the comments!

Just wanted to clarify, I haven’t come across any scenes in “The Shadow Rising” where Rand carries any women through the Aiel Waste. It seems like it might be an addition for the show or perhaps a dramatic representation on the poster. However, there is a significant part where both Rand and Moiraine separately journey to the sacred Aiel city of Rhuidean, and let me tell you, things definitely heat up there! Perhaps he’s helping her out at some point?

Additionally, I can’t recall any details about a field of spears in The Shadow Rising, but given the Aiel’s affinity for spears, it seems plausible that they might set up such a display. Furthermore, this arrangement could potentially signify the entrance to Rhuidean, which carries an air of mystery and eeriness.

We’ll undoubtedly find out more this weekend at CCXP! Watch this space.
