The feel-good British film Fisherman’s Friends is back on Channel 4’s streaming service in the UK. It was taken off the platform in August, but now you can watch it again.
This film is inspired by a true story and follows a group of fishermen from Cornwall who unexpectedly land a record deal. What starts as a joke quickly turns into something real as these down-to-earth fishermen navigate the challenges of working with their glamorous manager. Ultimately, they overcome their differences and achieve surprising success with a hit album of traditional sea shanties.
I was really impressed with the cast in Fisherman’s Friends! It’s packed with great British actors – you’ve got Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Dave Johns, Sam Swainsbury, and even Tuppence Middleton. Seriously, a solid lineup!

Like most films and shows on Channel 4, Fisherman’s Friends is only available on their streaming service for a limited time – currently 29 days. But don’t worry too much if it disappears, as Channel 4 often brings it back after it’s been shown on TV.
Despite being popular with viewers on Channel 4, the movie Fisherman’s Friends received mixed reviews from critics upon its release. It currently has a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 58 reviews.

According to a review in The Guardian, this charming and feel-good comedy is boosted by its likeable characters and heartwarming performances from actors like Daniel Mays and Tuppence Middleton.
On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Kermode & Mayo show, Mark Kermode described the film as comforting and cozy, like a warm sweater. The LAist FilmWeek podcast made a similar comparison, calling it like an old, comfortable blanket.
As fellow critic Susan Granger noted, if you liked feel-good British comedies like The Full Monty and Calendar Girls, you’ll probably enjoy Fisherman’s Friends – it’s a charming and heartwarming film with a surprisingly emotional impact.

In 2022, a second Fisherman’s Friends movie, titled Fisherman’s Friends: One and All, came out. Most of the original actors returned, and the same writers, Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard, wrote the screenplay.
The story picks up almost a year later, showing the main characters dealing with the challenges and excitement that come with their rising fame as they get ready for their major performance at the Glastonbury festival in 2011.
Digital Spy praised the sequel as a humorous and touching revival of the beloved, long-running buoy band.
You can currently watch Fisherman’s Friends on Channel 4’s streaming service, but the sequel, Fisherman’s Friends: One and All, isn’t available there right now.
