Charmed star Alyssa Milano pays tribute to late Shannen Doherty

As a long-time fan of “Charmed” and “Beverly Hills, 90210,” I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Shannen Doherty. Having grown up watching these shows, her characters, Prue Halliwell and Brenda Walsh, were an integral part of my childhood.

Alyssa Milano, an actress known for her role in “Charmed,” has expressed condolences after the passing of her former on-screen partner Shannen Doherty at the age of 53.

I’m a huge fan of the iconic sisters Phoebe, played by Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Prue, portrayed by Shannen Doherty, from the beloved supernatural show about three witches. Together with Holly Marie Combs as Piper, they brought the Halliwell sisters to life in this captivating series that ran for many seasons.

On July 14, Sunday, Doherty sadly died after a prolonged fight against breast cancer. Milano paid tribute to her screen sibling in a public announcement.

Milano openly acknowledged the intricacies of her connection with Shannen. At heart, she held deep respect and admiration for her.

“She was an exceptional actress, adored by countless fans, and her absence leaves the world diminished. My sympathies go out to everyone who treasured her.”

In the third season finale of “Charmed” that aired in 2001, Doherty’s character met her end at the hands of the demonic assassin Shax, resulting in a dramatic and climactic scene.

Rose McGowan took over the role of She, portraying Paige Matthews as The Charmed Ones’ half-sister on the show.

In her own eulogy, McGowan expressed that Doherty possessed a “courageous heart,” further commenting, “Shannen was a force of passion. I encountered her in the 90s and was left in awe. The privilege of truly getting to know her later in life was an invaluable gift. This remarkable woman fought to survive.”

She additionally characterized Doherty as a gently tough-as-nails individual, brimming with vitality and leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many.

I’m a big fan of acting, and one of the roles that really put Shannen Doherty on the map was playing Brenda Walsh in “Beverly Hills, 90210” and its following series.

I have come across many celebrity death announcements in my time as a journalist, but none have touched me quite like this one. The news of her passing was shared by her beloved publicist, Leslie Sloane, who painted a vivid picture of a woman who was deeply loved and cherished. She described her as a “devoted daughter, sister, aunt,” meaning she held strong family ties that were the cornerstone of her being. Furthermore, she was not alone in her final moments; her loved ones were by her side, providing comfort and support. But what truly tugged at my heartstrings was the mention of her faithful companion, Bowie. This dog was more than just a pet to her; they shared an unbreakable bond that transcended the human-animal relationship. It’s a reminder that even in death, the memories we leave behind can be a testament to the rich and meaningful lives we lived.

In March 2015, Doherty received the initial diagnosis of breast cancer. After undergoing treatment and surgery for two consecutive years, she shared the good news of being cancer-free in 2017.

In February 2020, it was revealed that her cancer had come back and advanced to its final stage, stage 4. Then, in June of the same year, Doherty disclosed that the cancer had continued to spread, and scans discovered that it had reached her brain and formed metastases.

In memory of Shannen, her “Beverly Hills, 90210” colleague Jason Priestley expressed his shock and sadness upon learning of her passing.

“Her presence was as powerful as the natural world, and I’ll deeply feel her absence. Wishing comfort and warmth to her loved ones during this challenging period.”
