Charlotte Church reveals her surprising reaction after taking magic mushrooms: ‘When you see that you can’t unsee it’

Charlotte Church shared how her experience with magic mushrooms led to a profound deepening of her connection with nature.

During her teenage and early adulthood, the artist found herself consistently busy, taking the stage in bustling stadiums nationwide with minimal downtime for relaxation.

Currently, Charlotte resides peacefully with her family – her partner and their three kids – at a house situated on the outlying parts of Cardiff.

In 2023, the artist known for “Call My Name” also established a tranquil eco-retreat in her native land, aiming to facilitate individuals’ self-discovery and reconnection with nature.

On the latest episode of This Natural Life, a BBC Radio 4 podcast hosted by Martha Kearney, aged 67, Charlotte shared insights on growing fonder of nature as she advances in years.

She shared that her bond with nature began to grow more strongly after having children, and it also deepened when she experienced magic mushrooms for the first time.

Experiencing magic mushrooms led me to a profound moment where everything in nature seemed to speak, sharing their secrets openly.

Martha added humorously: ‘There’s discussion on its advantages and drawbacks, but let’s not delve too deeply into that now.’

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to shed light on psilocybin mushrooms, a fascinating category of psychedelics that can subtly influence one’s mental state. These magical fungi can be consumed raw or brewed into a potent tea.

Charlotte previously revealed that she first took the drug more than a decade ago. 

During an interview with The Skylark, she shared that at around age 27, she had her initial encounter with magic mushrooms. This event led to a unique kind of bond, a profound insight, one that was much more inherent and intertwined with patterns.

Once that connection is made, you can neither forget nor detach from it. Since then, I’ve found myself delving further and further into my spiritual exploration – exploring the concept of the invisible realm, marveling at its mystery, amazement, and might, and the raw energy found in nature.

Living in a confined, monotonous existence much like my forebears has been the norm for many generations. For us working-class families, our vitality is predominantly drained by merely surviving, rather than engaging in meaningful pursuits or experiences that bring joy and fulfillment.

Embarking on my own personal journey of self-discovery, much like Charlotte’s, I found myself drawn towards the enchanting beauty of nature nestled in the heart of the Elan Valley, mid Wales. Inspired by this newfound appreciation for the natural world, it was only fitting that I establish my tranquil wellness retreat within a £1.5million mansion, where others could also embark on their own spiritual journeys amidst this breathtaking landscape.

Before officially opening the resort in 2023, the singer faced and overcame several disagreements regarding planning.

The makeover got transformed into a documentary series on the Discovery Channel, called “Charlotte Church’s Home Transformations.

On both weekends and weekdays, the ‘Dreaming’ experience provides extended stays lasting for three days. During your visit, you will have access to an array of wellness activities to enjoy.

The schedule features a variety of activities such as yoga sessions, a sound healing ritual, gathering edible plants, storytelling based on myths, stargazing, plunges into cold water, singing at sunrise, constructing shelters, creating sensory pathways, painting landscapes, dancing, dream interpretation, open-air movie nights, herbal studies, woodcraft, meditation practices, Qi Gong exercises, silent dance parties under the moonlight, and forest bathing at night.

During an interview on Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett’s Dish podcast in 2023, Charlotte shared that attendees at the retreat are free to select the activities that resonate with them, enabling them to understand their body’s requirements.

She continued by saying: ‘It’s all about giving you the freedom to select what suits you best. When you arrive, immerse yourself fully, listen attentively to your body’s needs, and decide what you want to engage in.’

As a devoted follower, I personally find that some individuals require complete, transformative rest due to an exhaustion of their nervous systems. On the other hand, others, including myself at times, are drawn to immerse themselves in the wonders of nature, rekindling that childlike curiosity and admiration.

Indeed, my focus lies in fostering connections with nature and utilizing sound as a therapeutic tool. As a practitioner, I embark on excursions where I conduct sound journeys, and I also engage in vocal offerings to the earth.

‘Another essential aspect involves ceremonial practices, such as rituals and lifestyle closely connected with the natural environment, following seasonal changes.’

Speaking about the reason behind establishing the retreat, Charlotte mentioned that, having been an activist for quite some time, she desired to direct her “beliefs” or “principles” towards her professional endeavors.

She expressed that she deeply cares about the future, particularly the fate of our planet. She firmly believes that we have the power to change our course, and as a result, she has chosen to participate in initiatives and even initiate some herself, aligning with her core values and activism.

We have a water-source heat pump and a hydroelectric mill, and we are planning to embark on a large-scale farming initiative for food production.

This year, we’ll cultivate approximately one to 1.5 acres of land for farming. Over the next two to three years, this area will expand to around 3-4 acres.
