Netflix has a brand-new survival film: . It also has a stellar cast, led by Charlize Theron.
The movie Apex launched on Netflix on April 24th and is already getting reviews. Critics gave it a 67% rating, which earns it a “fresh” badge and positions it as one of the top survival thrillers currently available on Netflix, even if it’s not the highest-rated film.
This score is based on 33 reviews, and it will probably change as more people share their opinions, since the movie was just released. Currently, there isn’t a rating from general audiences available.
What Are Critics Saying of Apex?
Despite beautiful scenery and cinematography, many critics found the film lacking in suspense and psychological depth. Todd Jorgenson of Cinemalogue noted the stunning visuals but felt the survival thriller lacked escalating tension, while Joseph Robinson from Fish Jelly Film commented that even the lead actor’s charm couldn’t save a film that often felt more like a calm nature documentary.
Other critics have praised this approach as well. Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com noted that the film’s focus on intense thrills, rather than overly sentimental moments or lengthy explanations, is one of its most appealing features, especially given its beautiful visuals and story of resilience.
In a review for Midwest Film Journal, Nick Rogers noted that films like Apex rely on subtle themes, unexpected moments, and convincing action to be effective. He found that Apex delivers enough of these elements to make its 90-minute runtime worthwhile.
What Happens in Apex?
A person finding peace in the wild unexpectedly becomes the target of a dangerous hunt by a serial killer.
In a recent interview with Tudum, Charlize Theron described her new film as a thrilling story about a woman battling a serial killer in the woods. She emphasized that it’s a survival story – not just a physical fight for life, but an emotional one, where the character discovers her own strength and resilience. It blends action, adventure, and psychological suspense.
The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, known for movies like Everest and Adrift. It stars Taron Egerton and Eric Bana, both of whom have previously worked with Netflix. Theron starred in a previous Netflix project, while Egerton led the popular 2024 film Carry-On. Bana also found success on the platform with a series that was later developed into a full show.
I’m incredibly excited about this project,” said Kormákur. “Filming in Australia’s stunning and challenging landscapes with actors like Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana is a real pleasure. It’s been intense putting them through a difficult experience for this unusual survival story, but it’s been worth it.
Apex is streaming on Netflix.
