Charlie Hunnam Passed on $1.3B Franchise Now Streaming on Peacock
Originally, the actor was chosen to feature in a sprawling $1.3 billion movie series – now, all three installments of this series can be streamed on Peacock.
The actor who played the lead in films adapting E.L. James’ erotic romance novels with themes of BDSM, featuring a businessman and a recent college graduate, was initially Universal’s choice, but ultimately, Hunnam withdrew from the project. It’s been suggested that his departure might have been influenced by the initial criticism over his casting, although it was officially stated as a scheduling issue. Fans have hypothesized that this backlash could have played a role in Hunnam choosing to step away from the lucrative franchise.
Approximately a month before the filming of “Fifty Shades of Grey” started, Universal announced that the filmmakers and Charlie Hunnam had decided to find another actor for the male lead due to Hunnam’s busy television schedule, which was preventing him from dedicating enough time to properly prepare for the character of Christian Grey.
Despite receiving unfavorable criticism, the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movies still proved to be a significant commercial triumph for Universal. The initial movie debuted in 2015 and quickly became a box office sensation, surpassing numerous records and earning over $569 million globally on a production budget of only $40 million. However, it garnered negative reviews and was even given the Razzie Award, which it shared with 20th Century Fox’s unsuccessful “Fantastic Four” remake.
The movie “Fifty Shades of Grey” was continued with two subsequent films, “Fifty Shades Darker” in 2017 and “Fifty Shades Freed” in 2018. Much like their earlier installments, these sequels garnered unfavorable critiques but managed to be financially profitable for the studio. “Darker” earned $381 million at the box office, while “Freed” grossed an impressive $372 million.
Charlie Hunnam’s Next Role Will Be In Netflix’s Serial Killer Series
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’ve always kept an eye on the career of the talented Mr. Hunnam. Even after wrapping up the epic saga we all loved, he didn’t let the absence from the commercially successful Fifty Shades of Grey franchise slow him down. Instead, he’s been gracing our screens in notable productions like Zack Snyder’s grand space opera Rebel Moon, where I had the pleasure of seeing him alongside Ray Fisher and Sofia Boutella. Not to mention, his recent role in the 2022 mystery film Last Looks, where he shared the screen with none other than Mel Gibson and Morena Baccarin. Truly, it’s a joy to follow his journey in cinema.
Following this, Hunnam is all set to make a comeback on television in the third installment of Netflix and Ryan Murphy’s fact-based crime drama series, “Monster.” The upcoming season, tentatively named, will center around Ed Gein, infamously known as the Butcher of Plainfield. Hunnam is cast as Gein, while Laurie Metcalf takes on the role of his mother, Augusta. As of now, a release date for the new season remains undisclosed.
All three Fifty Shades of Grey movies are now streaming on Peacock.
