Charlie Cox says there was "no acting required" on Daredevil: Born Again

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can confidently say that Charlie Cox’s portrayal of Daredevil is nothing short of exceptional. His performance on the Netflix series truly elevated the character to main event status. So when he was finally brought into the MCU, it was a dream come true for fans like me.

Charlie Cox undeniably embodies the ultimate portrayal of Daredevil. While Ben Affleck brought the character to life in the underestimated 2003 film, Cox’s rendition in the 2015 Netflix series elevated The Man Without Fear to a leading role within the Marvel live-action universe. Consequently, when it came time for Daredevil to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was no debate over who should take on the role.

Following the unexpected ending of the TV show, Cox made appearances as a guest star within the Marvel Cinematic Universe; his most notable cameo was on the episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. However, these brief roles are leading towards a more permanent return, as the actor is set to return to the character in full capacity for the Disney Plus series Daredevil: Born Again.

Apart from him, several actors from the initial series will also make a comeback, reprising their characters. This aspect particularly energized Cox during the resumption of shooting (for the second round).

More recently, Charlie Cox had a chat with Entertainment Weekly regarding his reunion with the cast from Daredevil in the upcoming Disney Plus sequel series titled Daredevil: Born Again. This new show brings back Matt Murdock’s friends and associates, including Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, so Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson will be reprising their characters.

That was a thrilling experience for Cox, who said that shooting one of their earliest scenes on the series was simply like catching up with old friends – because that’s what it was. He added that there was “no acting required” because the trio had a similar conversation in the green room prior to filming.

The first day on set with Deborah, myself, and Elden was really special because the scene that was written was like a scene where we were reminiscing over old times and all the things we’ve done… we certainly hadn’t been together, the three of us, for a long time. So there was really, literally, no acting required. The conversation we were having in the green room was the same conversation we were having in the scene, pretty much.

It’s truly touching to learn that these three characters were so integral to the original series, as they essentially embodied its spirit. What makes this even more delightful is that Foggy and Karen, who weren’t initially part of the plan for ‘Born Again’, ended up being included in the show. Interestingly, Marvel decided to alter their initial vision for the series when it was already in production, discarding previous plans and starting anew with these characters.

It wasn’t until later that they decided to develop it into a sequel series based on the original Daredevil, which meant that Woll and Henson could reprise their popular roles. Additionally, Jon Bernthal was confirmed to return as Frank Castle (The Punisher), and Ayelet Zurer was set to play Vanessa Fisk again, a role she had previously played in the initial version of Born Again.

Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Wilson Fisk (also known as Kingpin) in the Netflix series, was expected to return to the role for the upcoming series. This is because both he and Charlie Cox started portraying their characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe before “Born Again” was introduced. Earlier, it seemed that these versions of Fisk and Daredevil (played by Cox) would differ from their Netflix show counterparts. However, this changed when “Born Again” was transformed into a direct sequel, thereby incorporating the events of the Netflix series into the MCU.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil first showed up around the same time in 2021. The former was introduced through the Disney Plus series “Hawkeye,” while the latter made a brief appearance in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Daredevil has reappeared in “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law,” and both characters have been seen in “Echo.” Their next appearance will be in “Daredevil: Born Again.”

Of course, there’s plenty of anticipation for the upcoming series. Fans have been eagerly waiting for Daredevil, aka The Man Without Fear, to return on screen in a fresh take. However, some critics have raised concerns about disregarding the original show and its cherished characters. Marvel’s choice to rebrand it shows they’re acknowledging those criticisms while also honoring the legacy of the Netflix series appropriately.

Daredevil: Born Again premieres on Disney Plus in March 2025.
