Charlie Cox had "completely let go" of playing Daredevil before the show was revived

As a long-time fan, I can barely contain my excitement! The return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk in “Daredevil: Born Again” is like a dream come true. I remember the days when “Daredevil” was one of the best superhero shows on Netflix, and the Defenders Saga was my go-to binge. It’s amazing to see how far these characters have come, from their humble beginnings in 2015 to their recent appearances in the MCU.

In the year ahead, Charlie Cox (as Matt Murdock) and Vincent D’Onofrio (in his role as Wilson Fisk) will make their comeback in Daredevil: Born Again, a fresh revival of Netflix’s Daredevil series, seamlessly fitting into the narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This announcement follows the numerous brief appearances by Daredevil and Kingpin within the franchise since the cancellation of the original Daredevil series in 2018.

Starting back in 2015, Charlie Cox embarked on his role as Matt Murdock. Initially airing as a Netflix series, Daredevil soon proved to be one of the gems among superhero television productions. This series paved the way for an extensive franchise, referred to as the ‘Defenders Saga’, which introduced characters such as Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, The Punisher, and Iron Fist. In 2022, the Defenders Saga moved from Netflix’s streaming platform to Disney+’s library. Coincidentally, around the same time, Charlie Cox started making appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with notable roles including that in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

To the audience, Cox outlined the sequence of events leading to Daredevil joining the MCU. “I believe we wrapped up production on the initial series around late 2016 or early 2018, and learned it was terminated during that span,” he recounted, “It wasn’t until roughly mid-2020 that we received a call from Kevin Feige expressing Marvel Studios’ desire to revive these characters.”

Cox was keen to return, but at the same time, he revealed that he’d already moved on. “I completely let go.”

Despite Charlie Cox believing that his role as Matt Murdock was behind him, Vincent D’Onofrio remained hopeful. “He had moved on,” Cox said, “and occasionally we would talk. He would say things like, ‘They’re going to call us. I think they’re coming back for us,’ which I thought was a sign of delusion. He needed to let it go, I thought. It had been over for 10 years, but he just wouldn’t give up.”

Excitedly speaking here as a hardcore fan, I can hardly contain my anticipation for the return of “Daredevil: Born Again” in early 2025! Elden Henson will once again grace our screens as Foggy Nelson, and Deborah Ann Woll will be back as Karen Page. To make things even more thrilling, it was just announced at Disney’s D23 event that filming for season 2 has already begun!
