Characters playing the “shades of grey” role rising to forefront in WWE
As a seasoned gamer with decades of wrestling lore under my belt, I must say that WWE’s current character development is a breath of fresh air. The nuanced grey characters are captivating and keep me on the edge of my seat each week.
In the world of sports entertainment and professional wrestling, it’s all about the personalities that take center stage. Sure, the action in the ring matters and deserves attention, but what truly hooks fans week after week are the engaging characters on screen. Traditionally, villainous characters known as heels have been more intriguing, but a fascinating change is occurring – many wrestlers are transitioning into a grey area between good and evil. WWE is jumping on this trend to create compelling characters that keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
2023 saw Drew McIntyre’s WWE character undergo a transformation, moving away from the role of the “heroic babyface” towards more antagonistic, or “heel,” tendencies. Yet, this shift was justified and engaging due to McIntyre’s convincing portrayal of resentment towards Jey Uso. For years, Uso had caused distress within the roster, including targeting McIntyre specifically as part of The Bloodline. It was realistic for McIntyre to mistrust Uso and those aligned with him. This change resulted in compelling promos, heated feuds, and ultimately, a new contract that reflected McIntyre’s talent and hard work.
On SmackDown, Kevin Owens finds himself in a familiar predicament. For years he’s been at odds with Roman Reigns, and recently, he was taken aback when his former ally, Cody Rhodes, teamed up with Reigns in a tag team match. It’s easy to understand why Owens might feel betrayed by Rhodes, as this unexpected partnership has ignited one of the most intense feuds within the promotion.
It seems that Seth Rollins is heading towards an alliance with McIntyre, as he now faces conflicts with the WWE Monday Night Raw roster members who joined the original Bloodline during Survivor Series: WarGames.
Here are complex, multi-dimensional villains from past eras, not simply stereotypical, black-and-white “bad guys.” Instead, they possess depth and purpose in their portrayals. While their methods might be questionable, it’s professional wrestling – let them grapple!
Audiences keep returning for compelling character development, which is especially true in the realms of sports entertainment and professional wrestling. Crafting characters that resist simple categorization adds intrigue, as we’ve seen with the current top three foils in the WWE. These complex personalities will undoubtedly lead to captivating storylines over the next few years, perhaps reaching their peak in 2025.
