Chappell Roan on the toll of pop fame: 'I miss just walking around being by myself'

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the lives of famous artists and their journeys to fame, I can’t help but feel a deep empathy for Chappell Roan as I read about her experiences with celebrity life. It’s heartbreaking to hear her long for the simple joys of anonymity and the freedom to just be herself, without being judged or followed.

Chappell Roan says she misses walking around and being herself after becoming famous.

During an interview on “The Comment Section With Drew Afualo” podcast on Wednesday, the 26-year-old pop star shared her reflections on the aspects of life she used to enjoy before achieving fame.

As a film enthusiast, I often find myself reminiscing about the past and longing for certain experiences. One memory that comes to mind is the feeling of freedom I used to get from doing something unconventional in public, like taking drugs. It was an exhilarating sensation, akin to sharing a secret kiss with someone at a crowded bar. I miss the simple joy of being in a place where I could be myself, such as strolling through Forever 21, without any judgment. Nowadays, I wear a mask of normalcy, hiding my true self from the world. But what I truly yearn for is the ability to just wander around alone, basking in the solitude and peace that comes with it.

Roan also discussed the invasion of privacy that comes with celebrity life.

She expressed concern as people were becoming intrusive and tracking her whereabouts, even revealing information about her family. A few years ago, she had decided that if this level of stalking put her loved ones in danger, she would quit. Now, she feels that point has been reached. To avoid further attention, she has scaled back on actions that increase her visibility.

In June, a video was shared on social media where Roan, the “Hot to Go” singer, could be seen taking a break from her performance in North Carolina. She expressed her difficulty in coping with her sudden fame and mentioned having a rough day to the audience.

She expressed her sincerity to the audience, acknowledging the rapid pace of her career and the challenges she faces in keeping up. She assured them that she wasn’t holding back on purpose, but rather dealing with an overwhelming amount of responsibilities. Appreciation was extended for their understanding as this is all she had ever dreamed of, despite its heavy burden at times.

At the age of 17, Roan secured her initial recording contract with Atlantic Records. However, her journey to success took several years with no instant breakthroughs along the way.

Last September marked a turning point for her when her first album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess,” came out. Her performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk series in March went viral, and she made headlines with her appearances at Coachella and the Governors Ball music festival in New York. As a result, her popularity significantly increased, establishing her as an emerging artist to watch.

Although there’s pressure, Roan shared in a June TikTok video that she’s receiving encouragement from fellow pop singers during her challenging times.

She pondered over her life recently, expressing, “The last few weeks have been quite chaotic.” Surprisingly comforting and disconcerting at the same time, numerous pop idols we’ve admired for years or have been passionate fans of more recently have extended their support. These ladies stand by us, true sisters.

Having respected figures extend a hand of friendship or assistance towards me is an unexpected and heartwarming experience. It reaffirms my faith in humanity.
