Chappell Roan leaves fans thousands of pounds out of pocket as she cancels European tour dates last-minute because of ‘scheduling conflicts’
As a woman who has been navigating the often treacherous waters of public life for many years, I can wholeheartedly empathize with Roan’s recent statement. It takes immense courage to demand respect and set boundaries, especially when you’re under constant scrutiny.
Fans are outraged by the perceived unprofessional behavior of Chappell Roan, as she abruptly canceled several shows during her European tour with minimal advance warning.
The U.S. vocalist, originally known as Kayleigh Amstutz, has faced criticism following her decision to cancel her concerts in Paris and Amsterdam scheduled for next week on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the 26-year-old drag queen shared: ‘Due to scheduling conflicts, I have had to make the extremely hard decision to cancel my Paris and Amsterdam shows.
‘I have rescheduled my Berlin show to 23 September. I am so sorry & very disappointed 🙁 I promise I will be back. I’m heartbroken. thank you for understanding.’
Later on, she mentioned: ‘For those with tickets for Paris and Amsterdam, the refund will originate at the place of purchase. As for Berlin ticket holders, your tickets will be moved automatically to the new date without any action required on your part.’
She’s made her third cancellation within just a few days, following her announcement on Monday about withdrawing from the lineups for Lollapalooza Berlin and Superbloom, both of which take place on September 7 and 8.
People weren’t thrilled with the news, since they disclosed that they’d been unexpectedly burdened with thousands of pounds due to the sudden change in plans.
Some people had flown in from various parts of the globe for the performances, and one upset spectator took to Twitter to express their frustration after arriving in Berlin specifically for the event.
Others speculated that Roan might have postponed the show in order to focus on her upcoming live performance at New York City’s UBS Arena during the MTV VMAs on September 11.
They penned: ‘Choosing the VMAs over your fans?’; ‘Be respectful to your fans— challenge’; ‘Girl second blunder in a month?’
I’m actually seated in the hotel lobby in Berlin!! With just 48 hours’ notice!!! Honestly!!! It’s hard to believe, after spending so much money to attend, that you didn’t show up. Your fans are already here, waiting. This is heartbreaking; I can hardly comprehend such a move.
1. ‘Has the girl made another mistake within a month?’
“Two days till Girl Berlin arrives? I’ve already reserved my train and hotel. Why wasn’t this known earlier that you won’t be able to perform? It’s not the first time something like this has happened, try to improve.”
1. “This concert was arranged several months back. It’s hard to imagine a scenario causing such significant scheduling issues that numerous fans are now facing non-refundable travel expenses. Such an unforeseen and unprofessional mishap.”
The show isn’t just around the corner, more like it’s over a week away still. I must admit, I’m really frustrated. It feels like there are an unusually high number of scheduling issues arising – first with Lollapalooza and now this?
1. “I’m actually at the airport as we speak because I was scheduled to meet you in Berlin for our date. I’m incredibly upset about this, and it would have been better if you hadn’t shared the details so late. You see, some people make travel arrangements like booking planes, trains, and hotels.”
TopMob has contacted Chappell Roan’s representatives for comment.
From a humble beginning in a Missouri town with a population of only 6,000, Roan has experienced an extraordinary surge in popularity over the past year. This is largely due to her unique burlesque-inspired style and explicit lyrics that have captivated a large following among Generation Z.
Her journey to fame wasn’t simple; being the most closeted queer woman raised deeply religious, she had no connections in Hollywood and initially faced rejection from her music label.
More simply, Roan has reaffirmed her ability to turn down fan approaches when she’s not at work.
Following a heated TikTok post earlier this month regarding some unusual fans, the artist subsequently shared a clear message about her personal space on Instagram.
Following the submission of her six-page statement, the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer clarified that she disabled the comment section as it’s not intended for a group discussion.
‘I’m not afraid of the consequences for demanding respect,’ she wrote.
The singer compared her recent experiences to those that many women have felt or are currently feeling, suggesting a shared emotional journey.
“You know, my dear fans, I’m not exactly breaking new ground here,” I find myself saying. “It seems to me that a girl standing up for her feelings and setting her boundaries shouldn’t spark such frustration.”
In a recent TikTok post, the artist known as My Kink Is Karma expressed her feelings about fans who approach her outside of concerts or planned events. She stated, “Over the past decade, I’ve been tirelessly working on my project and now it has reached a point where I need to establish limits and boundaries.”
The performer clarified: ‘I’ve experienced far too many situations that were not consensual, both physically and socially. So, let me make this clear: Women do not owe anyone anything.’
Roan clarified to critics: “Whenever I’m on stage, performing, wearing drag, attending work events, or doing interviews, I’m working. In any other situation, I’m off duty and not in ‘work mode.'”
“I don’t feel obligated to reciprocate energy, time, or interest towards strangers, those I don’t trust, or find uncomfortable, simply because they show appreciation. This is my personal choice.”
The performer who sings and composes songs, often appearing in drag, highlighted her discussion on a particular issue – the prevalence of predatory actions (often presented as “devoted fan” behavior) that has persisted due to the historical mistreatment of well-known women.
‘It’s important not to make assumptions about someone’s personal life, character, and limits based solely on knowing them or their online presence.’
The performer from “Hot to Go” made it clear multiple times that being in the spotlight didn’t mean she had to tolerate unwanted advances such as unwelcome attention, inappropriate touching, or being stalked.
She compared it to the sexist and dangerous trope of a woman deserving to be catcalled or harassed for wearing a ‘short skirt.’
Instead of expecting the woman to endure and tolerate, it’s crucial for the harasser to act with decency, keep their distance, and recognize that regardless of what she chooses to wear, she deserves a peaceful existence in this world.
She expressed, “I’m feeling both fearful and weary,” and also shared, “The love I feel now is stronger than any love I’ve experienced before. At the same time, I’ve never felt as vulnerable or threatened as I do right now.”
The artist, who was born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, also asked fans not to call her by her given name.
Roan concluded by expressing: ‘I reserve a piece of myself exclusively for my project and for each one of you. There’s another part of me that is solely mine, and I value its privacy. I want to thank you for taking the time to read this, and I appreciate your empathy and backing.’
