Chappell Roan Bashes The Voice: ‘Scariest Audition Ever!’
Chappell Roan has spoken critically about The Voice, sharing her difficult journey during the audition process for the television program.
As a seasoned lifestyle aficionado, I can’t help but marvel at the meteoric rise of this 27-year-old pop sensation. Last year, her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” stealthily climbed charts, ultimately solidifying her place in the music scene as an unexpected breakout star.
Apart from admiring her melodies, her audience has also lauded the straight-talking demeanor of this Missouri-native singer. However, her actions came under criticism recently when allegations arose that she pushed her assistant during a red carpet event last week.
In her most recent interview, she remained straightforward, sharing that at the age of 15, she auditioned for “The Voice.
In February 2013, which was when The Voice broadcasted its fifth season, she celebrated her 15th birthday with Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and CeeLo Green serving as judges on the show.
In an interview with W, Chappell didn’t explicitly mention appearing before a celebrity panel, but she did discuss the harsh rejection she experienced from the producer or someone monitoring her audition tape.
“Chappell mentioned that when he tried out for The Voice, he was only 15 years old and sang the popular song ‘Stay’ by Rihanna from 2012.”
It was during a time when the Bruno Mars song ‘When I Was Your Man’ was extremely popular. I believed myself to be quite original by flipping it and singing “When you were my man,” making it about gender. However, every girl seemed to have the same idea: “I’m doing it too.
She mentioned casually, ‘As a side note, during my American Idol tryout, the person evaluating me didn’t even lift his eyes from his mobile device. His response was merely, “Next.”‘
Reflecting on that moment, I boldly ascended the stage and belted out an a capella number – undeniably the most nerve-wracking experience I’ve encountered. Remarkably, he barely seemed to notice me.
During the same conversation, she mentioned that The Voice wasn’t her only attempt at a reality television competition show back when she was a teen.
The Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl performer shared that she was just 13 when she auditioned for America’s Got Talent in Austin, Texas. We arrived at 4 a.m., joining thousands of others in line. I performed True Colors, by Cyndi Lauper, but unfortunately, I didn’t make it through the competition.
A few days back, there were accusations made against Chappell for shoving her assistant during a red carpet event, as seen in a widely-shared video from the 2025 Fashion Awards in Los Angeles.
At first, the video depicted her enthusiastically greeting fans while standing beside two others. However, at a certain point, it seemed as though the ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ singer may have accidentally bumped into her assistant and gently nudged her aside using her arm.

Users on social media harshly criticized Chappell for her “impolite and disregarding behavior” and her “unpleasant, malicious demeanor,” with one person stating: “It was a manipulative and mentally taxing action, with her hand there to suggest a push… truly ominous.
Last September, Chappell gained attention after fiercely responding to a camera-wielding photographer during the MTV Video Music Awards.
The interaction started as a voice, presumably the male photographer not visible on camera, seemed to call out for someone to “rotate” or “change position.
At one moment, a photographer exclaimed angrily, “Quiet down!” In response, Chappell retorted just as fiercely, “You quiet down!
She exclaimed, “Absolutely not, not I!” drawing a few gasps and chuckles from those present. A nearby spectator then encouraged her by saying, “Speak up, dear.

Previously, Chappell had openly expressed her frustration regarding some fans behaving in an unusual and intrusive manner, making her feel uneasy – a statement that sparked criticism on social media, with many users interpreting it as ungratefulness towards her celebrity status.
She stated on TikTok last August that it doesn’t matter if mistreatment, bullying, and stalking are common occurrences for individuals with some level of fame, however well-known they might be.
‘Just because such behavior is common in my profession doesn’t mean I have to accept it. I’m not indifferent to the fact that certain unusual actions are part of the job or career path I’ve selected.’
Chappell added: ‘Just because something isn’t acceptable or desirable, it doesn’t automatically become the norm. Merely acknowledging its existence doesn’t equate to my approval or preference.’
She boldly asserted that she didn’t care in the least if people considered her selfish for refusing requests for a photo, time, or a hug. She believed this wasn’t typical behavior, but rather unusual and strange.
