Chaos erupts on ABC as heckler interrupts live TV game show

On a recent broadcast of a quiz show airing on ABC television, the program erupted into disorder as an excessively eager spectator inadvertently revealed the solution to the episode while it was being filmed in real time.

In an astonishing turn of events, the New Zealand comedian and host of Guy Montgomery’s spelling bee, Guy Mont-Spelling Bee, was left speechless when a participant received an unforeseen assist from the audience during the competition.

Comedian He Huang found it difficult to recognize and subsequently spell the name of a nation depicted by one out of four international flags.

She inquired of Guy, “Beginning with G, is it [the name]?” Following her being presented with this ‘fun fact’: ‘Many heavy animals reside in this country due to the fact that many of them are still grappling with the emotional baggage from World War Two.’

‘Poland!’ a voice from the crowd yelled out, shocking everyone on the stage.

As I watched in awe, my heart pounding, I couldn’t help but feel the excitement ripple through me as Emma Holland and Rove McManus reacted in disbelief. My hands trembled as I saw Emma clap her palm over her mouth to muffle a surprised gasp, while Rove seemed frozen, his jaw agape. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated shock that left me breathless, feeling like I was part of the action myself.

Guy, clearly shocked, exclaimed, ‘That’s definitely against the law!’ This statement was followed by an eruption of boisterous chuckles from the crowd.

Co-host Aaron Chen sprung into action.

No worries, man, I’ve got this handled,” he called out, then made a show of darting towards the crowd as if to catch the person causing trouble.

Without letting them outshine him, Rove turned to address the crowd, querying, “Before I depart, might I inquire, do any of my ‘forerunners’ happen to be present?

‘That is generally discouraged,’ Guy responded.

The host firmly believed it was best to exclude the actual mistake from the show’s final version, as he found the unexpected and amusing nature of that particular moment particularly enjoyable.

In conversation with news.com.au, Guy expressed that the understanding or agreement between a live audience and TV game show participants seemed quite evident to him.

Which is, of course, not to participate in the game show unless you’re actually a contestant.

‘To be fair, no one was requesting spelling assistance,’ Guy laughed.

As a lifestyle enthusiast who appreciates the art of language, I must say that this show consistently attracts individuals who are passionate about words and their meanings, or those who take pride in their spelling abilities. This creates an electric atmosphere, filled with both exhilaration and tension, as we watch contestants come tantalizingly close to cracking a challenging word.

The comedian and talk show host tried to understand possible reasons why the supportive audience member might have breached the unwritten rule.

He hypothesized that one could feel sympathetic and a desire to assist, thinking something like, “I can guide them across this finish line.

In 2020, while under lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic in Auckland, an individual conceived the notion of The Guy Mont Spelling Bee.

He arranged for a few of his comedian pals to participate in a goofy spelling bee over Zoom, recorded the event, and shared it on YouTube, essentially launching an unofficial trial run for a live comedy act.

Joseph Moore joined us as a collaborative writer and presented his concept to ABC, with Aaron Chen involved as a co-presenter.

The series has garnered a quite passionate fanbase due to its consistent feature of renowned Australian and New Zealand comedians.

As a dedicated follower, I’ve been fortunate to witness an impressive lineup of comedians grace our stage, such as Melanie Bracewell, Urzila Carlson, Geraldine Hickey, Nazeem Hussain, Demi Lardner, Zoë Coombs Marr, Luke McGregor, Tim Minchin, Rhys Nicholson, and Steph Tisdell.
