Channing Tatum’s iconic “spicy” dance movie lands new UK streaming home

Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike has landed a new streaming home in the UK.

2012 saw the debut of the memorable dance film featuring Alex Pettyfer as Adam, an individual who left college prematurely. He was subsequently initiated into the realm of male stripping by the experienced performer, Mike (played by Channing Tatum).

Under Mike’s tutelage, Adam initially follows in his footsteps, but eventually grows tired of that lifestyle and yearns to chase his entrepreneurial aspirations. Simultaneously, Adam starts to behave recklessly as he gets ensnared in the realms of drug use and wild parties, creating turmoil not only for himself but also for those close to him.

In its initial release, Magic Mike made a massive splash at the box office, raking in $18 million in the U.S. The film was so successful that it spawned two follow-ups: Magic Mike XXL, which hit screens in 2015, and Magic Mike’s Last Dance, premiering in 2023.

British viewers have the opportunity to re-experience all the spicy moments, as the entire trilogy is now accessible for streaming on Amazon’s platform, Prime Video.

The original film is being lauded as both “spicy” and “clear,” currently boasting a high rating of 78% from 215 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have commended director Steven Soderbergh for his innovative approach, and they’ve particularly admired Channing Tatum’s blend of intensity and charisma.

According to Tim Robey from The Daily Telegraph, this isn’t your typical Soderbergh production on paper, but it exceeds all expectations in a remarkable way. His skillful handling of the cast is so impressive that virtually everyone involved emerges with a favorable impression. To put it simply, they’re like roses drenched in baby oil.

Manohla Dargis from the New York Times praised a harmonious partnership between Mr. Tatum and Mr. Soderbergh, noting how they skillfully blend Mr. Tatum’s warmth and allure, as well as his clear aspirations, with Mr. Soderbergh’s cool cinematic wisdom and recurring themes.

Empire Magazine’s Kim Newman described it as fantastic entertainment that also offers a subtle touch of wistful melancholy and muscular philosophical discourse. Richard Brody from The New Yorker noted that Soderbergh crafted a vibrant, clear, and energetic musical that is both zesty and strikingly contemporary.

All three Magic Mike movies are available to stream on Prime Video.
