Channing Tatum’s Dark Thriller, Blink Twice, Becomes a Global Hit 2 Years Later

Channing Tatum’s undeniable charm has been a major factor in his success in Hollywood. This appeal worked well in his 2024 film, and while the movie generally lived up to expectations, it also revealed Tatum’s surprising ability to play very intense and serious roles.

This film was Channing Tatum’s first leading role in a horror movie, though it leaned more towards a psychological thriller. It was deeply disturbing, intentionally based on the real and horrific issue of sex trafficking. Released two years ago, the film quickly gained popularity with audiences globally, becoming one of the most-streamed movies on HBO Max and Prime Video, even reaching the No. 2 spot in numerous countries.

Let’s be clear: Blink Twice isn’t like Magic Mike, 21 Jumpstreet, or even the charismatic Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s a different kind of movie.

Jayson Tatum, speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, explained that this was the first time he’d played a character he couldn’t connect with. He usually finds something to like or relate to in his roles, but he said he felt no affection for this particular character.

Tatum also jokingly noted how the film nearly forced him and Kravitz to “seek therapy.”

Blink Twice If You’re In Danger And, By the Way, You’re in Danger

This film marks the directorial debut of Zoë Kravitz, daughter of Lenny Kravitz. It centers on Slater King, a wealthy and charming tech billionaire who invites young women to his private island. What begins as a seemingly pleasant escape quickly turns sinister as the women are secretly drugged and subjected to further harm.

Frida, played by Naomi Ackie, initially falls for King, but soon begins to suspect something is terribly wrong, especially when her friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) vanishes. This disappearance sets off a chain of disturbing revelations, ultimately leading to a violent and shocking climax.

According to Kravitz, the story was fundamentally about how power shifts between people. He aimed to put the characters in a situation where they were cut off from help, because he believes that’s the most frightening scenario – whether it’s being confined in a car, a closet, or even a room at a party. Like the novel Lord of the Flies, he wanted to create a setting where the characters were forced to confront the breakdown of established power structures.

The film Blink Twice carries a powerful warning, making it a story with lessons on multiple levels. It was generally liked by both critics and viewers, and is gaining renewed attention with recent re-watches, which it certainly deserves.
