Chris Evans recently returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the hit movie Deadpool & Wolverine. While many fans were excited, it wasn’t as Captain America. Instead, he reprised his role as Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four, a character he played before the Avengers films. This appearance confirmed rumors about his return to Marvel, but in a different capacity than his iconic role as Captain America.
I, like many fans, have been hearing whispers for years about Chris Evans potentially returning as Captain America, Steve Rogers, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There were even reports suggesting he’d signed on as early as 2021, but he always shut those rumors down whenever anyone asked him about it. But honestly? Seeing that first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, which clearly focuses on Steve Rogers, it’s amazing to finally confirm he is coming back! It’s such exciting news.
Channing Tatum, who is set to play Gambit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently avoided answering a question about whether Chris Evans might reprise his role as Captain America in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, when speaking with E! News.
When questioned about Chris Evans potentially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Channing Tatum jokingly claimed he had no idea what the questioner was referring to. Despite the recent confirmation that Evans will appear in an upcoming Marvel film, it seems the cast is careful not to reveal any details about what’s to come. Tatum even quipped that he feared repercussions – being “black bagged and thrown in a car” – if he said too much. You can find his full statement below.
The first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday revealed Captain America’s return. The teaser was shown in theaters alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash and depicted Steve Rogers back in his familiar home – the same one where he danced with Peggy Carter in Avengers: Endgame. He’s seen packing away his Captain America suit, and the trailer confirms he and Peggy had a child together.
The first trailer for Captain America was released a year before the next Avengers movie. It was followed by trailers featuring Thor, then three characters from the X-Men (originally from Fox), and finally a teaser showing Wakandans and the Fantastic Four working together. A longer trailer for Avengers: Doomsday could be shown during the Super Bowl on February 8th.
In an interview with ScreenRant on June 9, 2025, Chris Evans initially stated he wouldn’t be in Avengers: Doomsday, saying he was sad to not rejoin his co-stars but confident they would create something amazing. However, after Marvel confirmed his return, Evans hasn’t publicly commented on reprising his role as Captain America.
The directors known as the Russo Brothers, who worked with Chris Evans on four Marvel films (two Captain America movies and two Avengers films), hinted when they released the Steve Rogers trailer that his story wasn’t over. They’ve since confirmed that Evans’ Captain America will be a key part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Although Channing Tatum isn’t sharing much, details about Avengers: Doomsday are starting to emerge.
